Hi Ron.
Yet another excellent creation from you and your friends. I love the driving rhythm section. It really made me sit up and pay attention when the song started! The music and lyrics, the arrangement and the production are all very engaging. Kudos to all of you. I always enjoy listening to your work!

Ron, R.W., D.A., Y'all are putting out some of my favorite music on the forum. I'm curious about your creative process. Who are you guys? How did you get together? How does your flow go and happen? The songs are always well-penned, well-sung, well-arranged and produced and mixed. And catchy! Simple, sincere, sad. There is a lot of experimentation (not the right word) with drum patterns in today's music. I applaud your choice - though I thought it would be more effective if it had not been through the entire song ("chorus" only, maybe?). The choices in BIAB (for those kinds of drums) is limited. To be expected, I think since it's a once-in-a-while thing. Looking elsewhere since I don't seem to be smart enough to create that in a drum grid (Have you listened to "Neon Eyes"?) LOVE! what you guys are doing!!! fj

LOVE! what you guys are doing!!!fj Floyd, THANKS for the listen and the kind remarks. Will briefly answer your questions in reverse order.... 1. Just listened to "Neon Eyes". Those are some BIG drums on the chorus indeed. 2. The "drum" sound on our song is a RealDrum track plus a percussion loop track included in the RealStyle. With a RealStyle like this I will sometimes drop out either the drum or the loop for a section, just to mix it up. It can provide contrast while maintaining rhythmic continuity. But for this song I kept them together for the entire song since in my mind the rhythm tracks represent the heartbeat of the narrator as his mind races through his loss. And life goes on, right? I do agree (and generally ascribe to) the theory that BIG sounds work best as an added dynamic element. 3. Our workflow starts with the lyrics. I'll write the music, arrange a scratch track in BiaB and record guide vocals and sometimes harmonies. If it turns out great we'll send it to Dusty for final vocals, harmonies and BGVs. Then I'll remix, etc. 4. Got together with my lyricist when he was born. He's my little brother. Found Dusty on the web but he's on speed dial now. 5. I'm an amateur musician and have been using BiaB since it was on 3.5" disks. My lyricist has a real job but has been writing lyrics as a hobby forever. Dusty is the pro musician. Anyway, so glad you enjoyed this tune, as well as our others. A little encouragement goes a long was for us. THANKS again!

Hello Ron,
What a very nice song! You're doing great with all the songs I heard from you. No matter what mood they express, I always get a smile on my face. In this song, the drums are excitingly present. I wondered if I would chose this kind of percussion in the song if it was mine. But I really liked what I heard. The drums are a contrast with your singing. Very clever!

The style I used on this one is titled "Inspire Cheery Indie Pop" so it doesn't sound like a good start for a song about death, does it? I wrote this song on guitar, input the chords and tempo into BiaB, then started auditioning styles in the pop genre. When I got to this style it sucked the song up like Dorothy's house in The Wizard of Oz. There was no turning back... Glad you liked it FWIW, my lyricist is the "clever" one. I'm just trying to keep up. Ha!

Hi, Ron. Sounds great - Dusty's a talented singer, and you're an excellent arranger. Good job with the lyrics, too. I like the way it stays low-key, which is appropriate for the lyrics. I'll echo gman97040 - very REM-ish (or should I say "REMinishent"?) As always, love your stuff!

Hi Ron.
I get a Michael Stipe - Losing my Religion vibe ( a good thing) I get that you were trying to maintain the momentum of the track which you succeded in doing but I would have liked to hear a bit more light and shade with the "instrumentation" (is that a word?). I enjoyed it and your mixing/mastering is very good.

"Instrumentation" is apparently used more in the technology field, but I know EXACTLY what you mean, so keep using it as far as I'm concerned. Ha!

Great song, Ron, I enjoyed everything about it:
- nice melodic pop feel - solid vocals, reminded me of Michael Stipe (REM) - heartfelt lyrics - tasty chord changes - mix, arrangement, backing vocals all sounded great!

Personally I'd want the bass to match the kick - but that's a preference of the personal side. I thought the phrasing of "Free from my mortal chains" was rushed by the Free part being a little too long. Cool band you put together. Cool vocals & Cool song.

Good song! I, too, thought (at first) that the background drums were a little over-powering. However, they did start to grow on me, after a while Well done, great job.

I thought the phrasing of "Free from my mortal chains" was rushed by the Free part being a little too long. Cool band you put together. Cool vocals & Cool song. Ray, thanks for listening! I'm with you on bass and kick in general, but thought the whole note bass lines served the song in this case. Good call on the "Free..." line. Happy you found it cool just the same. (Weird thing about this post: I typed in "held bass lines" but it got changed to "hero bass lines". When I went back into the editor, the text still read "held bass lines" but got changed to "hero bass lines" when I saved it. Huh. So changed it to "whole note bass lines". That worked.) Good song! I, too, thought (at first) that the background drums were a little over-powering. However, they did start to grow on me, after a while Well done, great job. James, THANKS for giving the busy percussion a chance. Glad you liked it!

I like the way you panned the echo vocal "so far away."
Pleasant tune. A definite 80s vibe without any cheesy synths. Your friend sings this well.
