A program can detect that it has crashed, report it and act like nothing bad happened, that does not change the facts. It's a crash.

The screen captures are attached to the first message in this thread.

Hi Sid,

An exception at bootup is uncommon, but of course is an annoyance, even if the program works fine when it is dismissed. Typical cause is an error hooking up to a plugin or audio driver. And many other possibilities of course.
Please post the log text file (the first 100 lines is fine. That usually points to where the problem is. There’s also a setting preferences that will write a special log file at bootup that shows where the exception is occurring.

Regarding your question about “program files”. Yes, Microsoft added rules and restrictions to any program residing in the program files folder, These prevent a program from saving files into the program files folder for example (depending if you have an admin account, and UAC settings). This happened over ten years ago, and I haven’t kept track of if windows has changed their policies. But a program in the c:\BB folder has been left alone and is able to read and write to files inside that folder regardless of the admin account status or security settings.

Discussed here…
https://superuser.com/questions/1031275/windows-allow-normal-non-elevated-programs-to-write-to-program-files-director/1031285#1031285
“ For example, if an application attempts to write to “C:\program files\appname\settings.ini” and the user doesn’t have permissions to write to that directory, the write will get redirected to “C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\appname\settings.ini”.
This just isn't something you can't change. This is intentional.”

As for Program Files - the folder is intended for programs, not their settings or the user's documents. To me, that was clear from the start and that hasn't changed. This is how it should be, settings and documents should be preserved and backed up and therefore kept separate from the programs which can be and frequently are reinstalled. It is also possible for a program to be used by more than one user and the settings and documents should be stored on a per user basis.

I have been experiencing this exact same problem and have tried several different things suggested by support. Nothing helped. They never once asked me for the error log. Here's mine, stopping before the first loaded modules entry for Windows System modules. Note that the date is Euro formatted, so that's 7 May, the last time I started up BiaB. Once I saw this forum thread, I knew it wasn't just my problem. I got tired of messing with this and moved on to other things, waiting for a general solution. I just wonder if this problem is related to a recent Windows update. I'll also note that I'm running on a Lenovo P17 where I had a recent graphics driver update.

Interesting. This might be related to the video driver or graphics card capabilities. It's related to setting transparency values on the form.

Sid.

there are many reasons for access violations. just google...'windows access violation'....including maybe malware.
I have no exceptions here...
(see my tips in the pg tips/tricks forum re buying a new pc or useing an existing pc for music production.)

i would be interested to see a pic of your win task manager to see running processes....this might offer clues..
do you have lots of other apps running at the same time as bb..?
eg the net and other apps ? are you running lots of apps that use lots of memory ?

the only way people can help you properly is to know info about your pc..such as the win task mgr pic being one.

also what sound interface are you useing ? behringer ? focusrite ? motu ? another brand ?

more info the better.

happiness.

I don't think this is related to the sound card, or audio device. I think this is a graphics related issue.

Peter will know more once analyzed.

We all definitely await feedback from the developers.

AudioTrack mentioned graphics and video. I wonder if the drivers for those are up-to-date, to go along with Windows updates. The two screens in the initial post just reference the calling program, but I was hoping there might be something else. The term ‘splash’ seems to occur in the logs and I’m wondering if that’s a reference to the splash screen, pointing as Trevor suggested to video/graphics.

OM’s suggestion to see what else is running (Task Manager) is a good suggestion.

AT.

with great respect there are lots of reasons for AV's...
from my experiences trying to help lots of people over the years with their rigs.
it might even be a memory corruption for example.

as my eyesight is still improving (happy lad..) am i correct in seeing on sids rig a lot of memory is used ?...and only a few gigs left ?

on my pc with bb open..out of 16 gigs memory approx only 2.2 are being used leaving lots of free memory.

ps...in asking for info on sound device
i'm just trying to get a rounded picture of sids rig.

The only apps listed in task manager is Google Chrome and Adobe Acrobat. Stopping them doesn't help, neither does a reboot.

I use a simple USB to 3.5 mm jack audio interface, it uses a generic Windows driver.
Windows update does not find any driver updates.
Intel had a newer graphics driver, it didn't help.

> The developers have clearly lost control over their software and are unable to regain it.

Please refrain from insults And no, we haven’t lost control of our software.

Now that you’ve posted the log we can look into it, and hopefully will find a fix so you’ll be like the thousands of other BiaB customers that have no crash on bootup/

have you read yet my tips in tips forum ?
and particularly point one..the link to latency mon ?.. which will assess the suitability of your pc for music production.
and will give clues re drivers.

also i would never use the 3.5 mm/usb set up.

more detail of what your needs are from your rig would help.
eg...do you want...
...recording ?
...playback of bb only ?
...midi ?

if your running a web browser like chrome...this tells me Likely this pc is on the net..is this the case....?
if so i still would like to see a pic of task mgr because i suspect other tasks are occuring in the background you might not be aware of.

bottom line...the major reason that pc users encounter probs doing music production on a pc is the pc hasnt been optimised for music creation....thus people get probs.

if you doubt me google 'optimising a pc for music production'..
and read my tips re importance of low dpc....plus various links
in my tips.
please note there is a wonderfull user community here full of people whove done it all from being novices to being very advanced with years of experience that can help you get set up correctly.

happiness.

I have a very simple setup in terms of hardware, and I'm not trying to do anything fancy. The crash happens when I start BIAB, not when I'm actually doing something with it.

My computer works for everything else I do.
Other audio programs, like Audacity and the Cakewalk DAW software work without any problems.

I bought BIAB because I couldn't find a quick and easy way to generate backing tracks in Cakewalk. That's the only thing I have used BIAB for, generating simple backing tracks to practice playing bass guitar. Why I would need any kind of optimization or specialized hardware for that is beyond me.

Transparency is used in several places in BIAB. It's used in the splash screen and also in the hints display and the track rename display:

I don't notice anything missing in the display after the crash (but then again how would I know ?)

I can bring up the rename track display without problems. I have seen hints/tooltips several places without crash.

I have had acccess violation messages in the past but as BIAB worked fine I didn't get upset about it. If the program is working fine it's no more than a nuisance and it's not what i would call a crash. Getting aggressive about PG MUsic is a little over the top.

The only people who can actually diagnose and fix this is PG Music. They are aware of the issue, and hopefully will have a patch available soon.

re why to optimise a pc for music production..

just because one app works ok doesnt mean another will... as different apps might use different aspects of the host os...in this case win.

in this case bb is doing things the other apps like cake arent.
cake doesnt do session musician track generation does it ?
and lots of other things that cake doesnt.
its like comparing different car brands. eg once i had a car needing lots of optimisation that was nothing but trouble but a mate had a toyota that was flawless and didnt need attention or optimisation.

for example ive lost count the number of times someone has said to me 'but my mate fred gets no probs with same apps...why me ?'.
the answer is there are many different pc configs...and set up many different ways.

Dr Pg is right ...thousands of users... bb works for them...the pg user showcase is testament to that with a ton of new songs posted each month that use pg software.

anyhoo thats it from me as its difficult to help without knowing certain aspects of someones pc..eg people helping you are like a doctor diagnosing a persons health problem as a result of a check up..
if you doubt me go on gearspace.com where thousands of studios large and small hang out and start a thread 'why do some people have problems with their pc's and other people dont useing the same music production apps'.

fyi a whole industry exists whereby custom pc's are built for recording studios by companies. such pc's are optimised for production work as some studios need to be assured of no day to day probs.
(see gearspace again mate.)....
ps..dont blame pg if they cant solve the prob.
its difficult often to offer solutions as each pc can be different....and set up many different ways. note my pc runs flawlessly.

happiness.

For the crash on bootup issue, please post the following log file

1. First put a file called WriteBootupLog.txt in c:\bb\data (assuming your BB is in c:\bb). (if you prefer, select the checkbox edit-preferences- write a detailed bootup log).
2. Then reboot the program, and when it boots up, you’ll see a message offering to show you the log file.
3. Please post the log file here. The file is called c:\bb\data\bootuplog.txt. It will end before the crash but at least tells us when the crash occurred.

This thread has been an interesting exercise in terminology. About the only thing I am sure of is that calling this a crash on startup is not the real story. We have progressed all the way here before knowing what we needed to know to even begin to define the problem: The splash screen shows up okay, it goes away and then the Mixer shows up, followed by the access violation messages.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
