Here's an instrumental that I recorded using the Reason DAW.

One thing that's great about Reason is that it has a really nice bundle of plugins - amps, effects, drum modules with loops and individual kit pieces (which I have used for really specific parts).

I wrote the basic structure on a clean guitar part (mostly in G major, but a modulation to A major, and an abrupt shift to Bflat major for some color. I was listening to the song "Two Rivers" by Jeff Beck, and I noticed how at the end of a phrase, he would bend up to a note slowly, without picking it, so you'd hear the chord tone at the end of the bar, with much less volume, so it kind of "drifts" into the bar - and I was trying to do something similar, instead of just picking everything. As I'm usually hung up on technique, it's nice to do "less", and unlearn all those rules I have somehow imposed upon myself.

I could not find my way around BiaB well enough to find any parts that worked - so I played everything by hand. I am thinking that using BiaB for newer projects will work best if I start the project in BiaB, and then import those tracks into Reason, rather than try to find specific parts in BiaB that need to exactly match what I've come up with.

OK I have rambled on too much - thank you for listening and for your comments - Randy

Randy,

I really like that use of the "bent up note" . . . sounds really cool and gives this instrumental an engaging sound. It's a cool listen.

I was intimidated at first by BIAB and though I've been using it for some time I still find it often fails to give me the sound I'm looking for. But stay with it and experiment. I'm not a good enough guitar player to rely on my playing more than I do on BIAB, but I thing it can be a great compliment to your own playing. So experiment on putting together a backing mix on which you can layer your own instruments. There are many on this board that do just that . . . and you can have the same success.

Welcome to the board,

Deej

Randy, interesting motif you used here, and super guitar technique and tone. BiaB can certainly provide this type of backing track, and easy ways of building more variety into your tracks. It will almost never play EXACTLY what's in your head, but can get close, or close enough to call it a collaboration (ha!). There is of course a learning curve, but it's been worth it for me, and I probably use like, maybe 10% of what BiaB can do. Plenty of folks in this subforum and the others who can help. Good luck!

Randy, great chops and tone.
Super nice bend technique.
You are correct when you said it must be easier if you start the song in BiaB. Most of the time that is true, especially if you have a lick you want to play on your axe. It can take some time to find the right style but it can be worth it in the long run.

Thank you - I appreciate it.
I felt disappointed since I could not find an exact specific rhythm in BiaB for a new project that I'm almost done with - but now I realize that's not always going to be possible. For my new ideas, I'm going to really use BiaB for backing tracks -

That's the longest fade out I've encountered at just over two minutes.
What's what? I don't know of this is you, BIAB or " Keyboards, synth bass, guitars, and a groove from the Splice website!"

Cheers

Hello, Randy. Yep, BiaB is a learning experience, and just when you think you have it all firgured out, you'll learn more. You surely came to the right place to learn. Love the tone on your guitar. Good feel, and I hear what you're doing with the Beck Bend. The whole piece reminded me of Larry Carlton in Against All Odds.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yes thanks, I fixed that mistake on the long unintentional fade-out.
Regarding the piece, the drum groove I got from the Splice website - and I played the keyboards (strings and synth bass), clean guitar, distorted guitar. I wrote the chords on a clean guitar, and wrote the melody with the lead guitar. Thanks for listening.
