Pedal steel soloist is a must playing both c6 and e9th necks we all have our favorites and if we start with Charlton that would be Great. Also swing/jazz fiddle a la Gimble to start with perhaps some twin stuff too. Also, swing not bluegrass mandolin..I know a lot blurgrass players that can play swing to a degree and some are very good at it but ain't like listening to someone who lived eat and breathed this style of playing..Tiny Moore..Gimble are good ones just name a couple.
