This tune may sound a bit familar to some. The backing was used a couple months ago here in the forum to demo attempts at writtining a full 6/8 arrangement and utilizing 4/4 Real Tracks based on triplets from BIAB to fit the 6/8 groove.

Once the arrangement was completed I turned to writting the lyrics and singing the vocals. Best to write about what you know, so the topic/title is near and dear to me at this time. My wife for 49 years was diagnosed with advanced stage mixed dementia (vascular and altzheimers) ~ 10 months ago. I have been her full time caregiver since then. Each day we say goodbye to each other a little bit more.

Quote
The Long Goodbye

Intro (10 Bars)

Verse 1: 16 Bar
In the quiet of the morning, you used to know my name,
Now the silence lingers, nothing feels the same.
We walk the paths together, but you're lost in distant lands,
I'm holding on to memories as their slipping through my hands.

PreChorus 8 Bars Instrumental | F add9 | C/E | Dm | Dm/G |

Chorus: 16 Bars
It's a long goodbye, a slow fading light,
Every day I see you slipping away further from my sight.
In the shadow of the past, where our momeries used to lie ,
I'm holding on to your love in this long goodbye.

Verse 2: 16 Bar
Photographs and laughter, echoes of a time,
When you could tell our story, every single line.
Now your eyes simply wander, searching through the haze,
Trying to find the pieces of our long past days.

Bridge: 8 Bars Instrumental

Chorus: 16 Bars
It's a long goodbye, a slow fading light,
Every day I see you slipping away further from my sight.
In the shadow of the past, where our memories used to lie,
I'm holding on to your love in this long goodbye.

Verse 3 Ending : 16 Bars
And though you may not know I'll always hold you near,
Through every stolen moment, through every hidden tear.
In this tangled twilight, love will be our guide,
I'll always be right here with you, in this long good bye.

Outtro 2 Bars

DrDan, achingly beautiful. Gorgeous arrangement and instrumentation, and heartfelt vocals. So sorry for what you're both going through. Your song makes me understand in a small way your pain, and in a larger way your grace. Thanks for sharing something so personal. Wishing peace for you both. Ron

Dan,

I echo everything that DC Ron said and I would like to add a few things.

I find this to be heartbreakingly beautiful but also incredibly, mind-bogglingly strong and courageous. So much so that it really makes me salute you as a human being. I really am so sorrowful about the circumstances that you're facing, but I completely admire you and have absolute and utter respect for the soul that you are putting on display in this song at this moment in time.

The song is such a beautiful thing.

I would love to see the lyrics if you wanted to post them here on the forum or on SoundCloud.

The lyrics are incredible. My most heartfelt and strongest prayers for both of you.

Hi, Dan.

That's a tough situation, and a hard song to hear.

For something so honest and personal, there's really nothing I can say.

Thanks for sharing.

I totally agree with DCRon.
I can hear your pain in your vocal. How in hell could you even sing this?
I feel really sorry for the situation that you are in. You both are in my prayers.
An outstanding song.

Dan...this is so poignant and touching...gorgeous song...it's heartbreaking to think about what you and your wife are going through....but in spite of that you have composed and written and performed a song that is so identifiable to so many people and you have done it in this tender heart-felt manner...well done and thanks for reminding us of this challenge in many older couples lives...I pray the best for you and your wife.

THat's a difficult topic to talk about let alone sing about. Too many people are dealing with that on a daily basis. We have it in out family at this very point in time as well.

Thank you for that song.

Fact is we should be talking about this more (although I understand, maybe not here in our forum grin).

It is a silent epidemic. My wife is 70 and was physically healthy. Ya, over the past 4-5 years there were small signs of memory and cognitive decline, but we all considered it old age. She stopped driving 2-3 years ago but otherwise things were ok – life went on. However, 10 months ago her dementia advanced to psychotic behavior. I considered it a stroke due to sudden onset. This led to 9 days of behavioral health hospitalization. This behavior is today managed with Risperidone. We are together now in our home getting by the best we can. I won’t sugar coat it, it is a severe life-ending hardship for us both. But it is amazing what one can do when needed.

The prayers and kind words (and of course music making) go a long way in making the situation tolerable.

And regarding how I am able to sing the lyrics, I can only say that I have no tears left to cry. Which may be the title to my next song. smile

Dan, so sorry you are going thru this; you both are in our prayers.
You've displayed incredible courage in sharing your pain in a heartfelt song that many across the country and around the world could never do.

Stay strong, sing to your wife, and know that you guys are not alone.

What a tender lyric and beautiful song this is, Dan.

The piano opening and the chord progression are strong. I (Janice) lost my oldest sister to dementia three years ago and like you, my brother-in-law was my sister’s primary caregiver for her last two years. Listening to music together was like a magic potion for her.

Your song eloquently describes the love and devotion that help us to endure such heartbreak.

“In the shadow of the past, where our memories used to lie,
I'm holding on to your love in this long goodbye.”

We hope that music will help soothe your heart and that it will give your wife some joy.

Peace to you both.

My father passed from complications of Alzheimer’s, so I can relate. They simply turn into someone else.

Thanks for the song. I know science is still working on a cure. Let’s hope they get there soon.

For those of you how know a bit about me and care to hear a bit of the Long Goodbye ending. My wife of 49 years passed away yesterday with me and our four children at her bedside here in our home. For the past year she suffered from vacular and altzheimer dementia. She was unable to speak and I was her full time caregiver. This women was more than just my loving wife, she was also my muse who inspired my music creativity and artistic expression. If I wrote or sang a love song, it was done for her. I miss her more than words can say.

Dan,

So very sorry to hear of wife's passing. I recall listening to your song a couple of months ago on a different forum here at PG Music. We exchanged a few comments on that forum. The song you wrote was so touching and beautiful.

It appears I'm headed down that same road. I can truly empathize with the dedication and unrelenting passion it takes to care for the one you love and cherish so much.

I wish you and your family strength and peace as the days pass. My thoughts and prayers will be with all of you.

Alan

PS: We're probably of a similar age - I'll be 78 on my next birthday. Stay strong, my friend.
