Hi all,

Does anyone else work with Mixcraft? I'm not a pro sound engineer, just a musician who mixes and masters his own stuff. I really like this DAW and for the price it's quite nice with lots of effects and possibilities. Let me know your experience, if you use Mixcraft as well.

I began in 1970 with a 7 piece dance band. I had other bands, but my most successful one was "The four Windows", a 4 piece guitar band. Many concerts, TV shows, Record contract with EMI and a guitar hit in 1982 in Europe with my "Lonely Seagull".

Hi, Wolf.

I've looked at it before - it was nice, but not quite what I wanted.

The most important thing about a DAW is that it works for you.

So if it works for you, just use it and don't give it a second thought.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Although Mixcraft claims to be a
Quote
digital audio workstation (DAW) software for Windows that has earned itself a reputation for being the go-to software for both professional musicians and enthusiasts.
, that is wishful thinking from their marketing department.

$149–$199 for a minimum featured DAW that does not offer phone support and only works over Windows? That should be a hard pass.

Cross-platform (Mac/Win) apps like Audacity (free) and Reaper ($60) likewise have no phone support but there are a ton of chat boards etc. to help and also have dedicated users here. Both have a lot more functionality and features than Mixcraft. If you plan to use the BIAB VST (and why wouldn't you?) Audacity is ok but there are experts around here when it comes to Reaper.

If you have any MOTU hardware, you qualify for a free license for Performer Lite, cross-platform, 5GB VIs, lots of plug-ins, regular interactive tutorials and phone support. You can also exchange files with Digital Performer users.

Wolf, I used it for a while, after SONAR but before Studio One. Mixcraft worked fine and was intuitive. If it meets your needs, stay with it. If you run into a feature you need that it doesn’t have, you can try demos of other DAWs until you find one you are comfortable with.

Cakewalk by Bandlab is phenomenal and still free, I think.

Still free. They've hinted at paid future content, but so far no cost at all...

Not free anymore, but not expensive at all, considering the stuff you're getting! I like it a lot. It comes with good effects, but you can easily add outside VSP files, like Wave, Melda, etc.

Windows only. One of my many objections to GarageBand and Logic is that they are Mac only.

When there are good, cross-platform freeware and cheapware DAWs available, I don't see the point for beginners starting anywhere else.

Experienced users didn't have such choices when we started out — 1998 might as well have been the Dark Ages as far as I am concerned. I stumbled into Digital Performer back then and it's still my choice but I have since learned Logic, Reaper, Audacity, Bitwig, Harrison and a few others just so that I can collaborate with others, without which I could not have made a living during the pandemic.
