When I bought The Bends upon release it had a companion CD Iron Lung with a stellar voice & acoustic guitar rendition of this song...ALMOST as powerful as the original.

The vocals are actually a clusterf*ck of compromises.
I didn't want to use a falsetto part and I didn't want to transpose the high part down as most singers do, so I started low (had to) to be able to go somewhere, to have a late climax.
It was a conscious decision with the risk that I would probably lose most of the audience before the best part came smile
