I'm late to the party, but finally moving everything to MP3s and plan on using Anytunes for setlists and playback.
Did a really fun rooftop party downtown for the solstice - and seems like I'll be doing more of that sort of thing again, just bass & drum tracks behind piano. Everyone here who said "just because you can doesn't mean you should" was right, too many things to go wrong and little things you can't really control playing from the program. Especially the mix.

One thing tho that I liked about using BIAB on the laptop is a visible (silent) count-in. Do others use an audible one with the mp3s? I suppose I could also look at the waveform in the Anytunes playback window and "see" the count-in. Worried about not hearing it when live . . .

I use an audible count (2 bars) before my track starts. I normally mix the count-in at a lower volume than what the track plays. I also choose a softer sound than 2 drumsticks hitting each other. I do this in my DAW, not sure how/if you can do both of these in biab.

Interesting comment on watching the waveform. A lot of times I guess I do that when performing.
I also use Anytune Pro.

Like you I initially thought I could get by with a visual rather than an audible count-in, but it just didn't work.

Now when I make my AVI files I use an audible count in, but clip off one bar as I feel that two bars is too long. I also use the drum fill count-in rather than just a stick count-it's more musical.

You can always add other instruments for a fuller band sound and just toss the count in altogether. Just let the band start and since you know what the song is, jump in right there at the start. You might miss the first beat or two but no one will care.

My philosophy on playing live is to keep it as simple as possible. And have a backup source for the music.

Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.
You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

That’s a good approach for a variety of tunes. Often in the arrangement I’ll just let the “band” groove for 8-16 bars before the head. I’ll throw in a few licks here and there before taking the head.
Funk tunes work well with this approach

Backup is simple with Anytune. I can easily sync my IOS devices (phone and tablet) with the same setlists and song marks (loops, intros, outtros, etc). I normally play with the iPad (older person like bigger screen) and have the phone as backup. I’ve only had to use the backup once at an outdoor gig where my tablet overheated and shut down. Took about 15 seconds to switch over.
Make sure you switch phone/pad to airplane mode and turn off any notifications. Otherwise you may get a phone call in the middle of Cissy Strut. Been there done that.. Learned the lesson. Managed to turn it into some audience entertainment.

July 20 Update:

I noticed Anytune added (ver 2.5) a Count In feature to their software.

Might be worth exploring.
