You're right, a cacophany of chaos is probably what they lived in. OSHA wasn't created until the 70's so I'm sure management paid little attention to the droning noise levels.

In high school I worked in a factory where the repetitive pounding and humming of the machines was quite noticeable and I remember trying to make my pounding compatible to form a crude ryhthm. Maybe that contributed to my interest in music.
