Well, this song stumped me at first. I had the idea in my head of what I wanted but I couldn't figure out how to do it. But since I have no compulsion to post songs that I don't like, I kept working. Anyway, I think I am close now. Hope you like it.

Bass players should appreciate it.

WHO SAYS

By David Snyder

V1

Who says
I must believe
What anybody says to me
I know you must agree
Certainly
When nothing makes
Any sense
Anymore
When you and I
Have no idea
Who’s behind the door
Or who we’re rooting for
With this constant tragedy
Addicted to anxiety

CH

So who says
who says I must believe
Cause I’m not deceived
And I don’t believe anything
That anyone says to me
Yeah I’m not deceived
And I don’t believe anything
That anyone says to me
Why should I

V2

Who says
This propaganda
Is the not lies that we perceive
I know you must agree
Undeniably
When nothing makes
Any sense
Anymore
And you and I have no idea
Who decides the score
Or what we’re fighting for
In this foolish comedy
So much idiocracy

CH

So who says
who says I must believe
Cause I’m not deceived
And I don’t believe anything
That anyone says to me
Cause I’m not deceived
And I don’t believe anything
That anyone says to me
Why should I

So who says
who says I must believe
Cause I’m not deceived
And I don’t believe anything
That anyone says to me

That's a unique song. It has a Bowie kind of groove. Some of the chords have that feel.

The chorus gets better and gives it a nice momentum.

Regarding the lyrics and message..... Spot on. There's so many lies constantly from practically every single direction it's hard to discern the truth anymore. I take everything I'm told by anyone as possibly true but probably not until proven to be true beyond a doubt. Sad that we live in such a world where everyone thinks they have to lie about even the smallest things.

Thanks Herb.

I love your "analysis" of the theme. Very wise words and I could not have said it better.

Peace and word to the brother.

WOW David this is so good and so true!
You picked the perfect backing band for this song.
The lyrics are spot on. The lies are started by politicians and spread via the media, I hardly believe anything any more. Well the fact that God is in charge and he is our savior is the one thing I believe
Outstanding song

So nice. Love how the strummed guitar climbs out of the wall of synths. Those synths sound really cool, but that guitar just takes charge. Can hear the Bowie influence, but also reminds me of early REM, except I can understand your lyrics. And what nifty lyrics they are indeed. Never feel like a song of mine is ever finished, but this sounds quite polished to me. Really enjoyed this one a LOT.

You had me with “bassists should appreciate it”, I love a good and interesting bass.
Besides the nice, driving bass, it's the rhyme scheme and prosody in general that I really love and that grabs and holds my attention.
Really really well done, David!

Thank you Mario. In addition to writing some of the finest tunes here on the forum, I can say one other great thing about you:

You have excellent taste in great music.

That is one thing that I've noticed about this forum that is very particular.

There are so many people on here who are writing music that is beyond human comprehension, never failing to be epic, wonderful, fantastic, and worthy of worldwide effusive praise.

That is why I know that when you, a virtual wellspring of musical goodness, chooses to reflect on the phenomenal achievements of my own aspirational works, that I am in good territory and that I must truly, as is the case with everyone here, be walking among the gods.

Yours in all humility,

P.S. Thank you for the love of the instrumentation. Just one clarification. I did not pick the backing band. I am the backing band.

Hey David, this is one aspiring bass player that appreciates your work for many reasons.
One reason is that you are your own man with pluck and a non-conformist edge, I admire that backbone.
Like me, I doubt you have ever kissed an a** in your life. [Can I say that on this forum?]

Folks like you cut your own path thru the wilderness and fearlessly say what needs to be said while other men hide in the shadows and follow.
There are far too many sycophants in our politics today.
And we seem to be in an era of falsehoods and lies where anybody can create their own "truth" to fit their agenda. Jan 6 was a "normal tourist visit" is one of my favorites.

Truth is truth and lies are lies.
Keep preaching it brother and keep that creativity going.

Remember, lies are only important if they are believed.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

I really like this though, seriously, the bass being off center is doing my head in.
There were points where I though I'd like the song "polished" a little more but then the chorus comes around & I remember the point isn't spotlessness.
Why should you, after all?
COOL

Cheers

Man, I love this song. No surprise there cuz it's one of yours, David. Now the bass... I think Bass Thumper Steve said it best. I'm not a fan of what I call the Tommy James 8th-notes-on-the-root style --especially with a pic. But you make it work so well.

Man, i really appreciate your ability to create lyrics. Terrific signature vocal. Outstanding production.

Who says? Me --just another nobody... who knows what he likes.

Enjoy whatever happens!

David,

Sometimes it's hard to decide what kind of arrangement to make.
I get stuck sometimes too, so I understand how you feel.
I'm drawn in from the bass at the beginning.
You've clearly found the direction, and it creates a great atmosphere.
Both the performance and vocals are wonderful.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

HI David,

This is so non-generic and speaks its truth boldly. I think (not sure, though) that you personally played every track on this one. The extra reverb, compared to your usual application thereof, is perfect - unlike the slop that too often comes from people's ranting and rambling about their opinions on eveything under the sun.

It has drive, character, and tugs at the brain of the listener. A tip of the hat - hell the whole damn hat - for a job well done. I don't drink much of the Kool-Aid from any of the political and social entities.

I think you speak for more people than you might think with this one. And I like your voice.

Cool song!!!

Alan

"Who decides the score
Or what we’re fighting for
In this foolish comedy
So much idiocracy"

WE decide assuming we are willing to listen to or read a variety of sources and vet them to the best of our ability.
Or we can select one of the myriad bubbles and flop around in it ad infinitum. Or something like that. smile

Back to topic.

We experienced this as hard driving energetic rock with a no mud cut through the mix vocal.
And a cool vocal at that.
As alluded to the lyric is a well stated reflection on today’s somewhat sad reality.
The session folks are cookin' - you and the BiaB guys.

Glad you got unstumped!

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
