This was vociferously requested by the, currently quiet, "Musocity".

PGM have changed a number of the old dialog boxes to "non-modal", which don't lock you in, but there are still a few "modal" dialogs that do. I think PGM are aware of the benefits are are working on the trickier-to-do dialogs.

I'm not sure if they still do, but in the past Microsoft's GUI tools used to default to modal dialogs, which are easier to handle, and I think many programmers just went with the flow. That was a shame as it's so much easier to design non-modal in the first place than to change in retrospect.
