A Sound of Thunder
I had the basic lyrics written out for this in April and was working on the music this summer. After the assassination attempt in July, I decided to hold off completing the song lest anyone misconstrue the meaning of the song. This song has nothing to do with assassinating any U.S. president. The idea for the song is the well-worn science fiction theme that if time travel were possible, would you eliminate someone like Hitler or Stalin, or John Wilkes Booth or James Earl Ray? If your haven't read Ray Bradbury's short story "A Sound of Thunder," you might not understand some of the references. Musically, I might have gotten a little too ambitious because I was trying to do something different from my usual. This was the only piece of music I worked on for the two months I had off this summer. Yeah, I was a little lazy.

***Per Marty and Dave's suggestion, I gave the vocals a little boost. Let me know if it is too much or not enough. Per Ron, I fixed the ending instrument drop. Thanks, fellas!

The style is FLANNEL, which lists the band as 1009 bass, 639 guitar, 3184 guitar and real drums rockhard09; however, when I generated the tracks (more than once), the tracks were 1592 bass, 1559 guitar, 1597 guitar, 3184, guitar, and real drums RockhardLA. I kept them all except 1597

Dark, brooding, mysterious, ominous & mesmerizing... This is quite the production!

Awesome vocals and an outstanding mix. I think you completely nailed the vibe you were after.

Excellent work!

Hi Scott
Interesting song
Awesome Intro !
You did a great job on the vocals to this song
I'm sure it wasn't easy to capture the mood of the song vocally.
The story of the song is also very interesting.
I really like it
Great work Scott
Andi ;-)

Ezekiel,

I was reading the lyrics while that excellent intro was playing--what a terrific write first off. This, for me, has a bit of a Bowie vibe . . . love the sound and feel of this one. Lots of rich textures throughout that really engage the ear. Wonderfully done!!

Hi, Scott.

Cool! I agree with Deej that it's got a "Bowie" sort of vibe. Love the sound, the vocals and the cool harmonies. smile

Nice so to see you managed to fit the Erhu into the arrangement!

I'm a big Ray Bradbury fan, so the references were also neat.

As for being lazy during the summer, I didn't get any songs done, so you're way ahead of me. wink

Wow, holy Spiders from Mars, Batman! This is GREAT. That opening is really cool, and I love the lead bassoon. The whole track has a delicious swirling vibe that perfectly supports the song and (great!) lead vocals. Those double-tracked(?) vocals have a sweet FX chain as well. Just a fantastic write, killer vocals and sublime production. If you spent two months on this, it was time well spent indeed. Nice one!

"A Sound of Thunder" is one of my favorite RB tales. I read them all dozens of times back when kids didn't spend 12 hours a day on their phones.

Edit: The held notes at the end cut off before they decay completely in case you intended a different ending. FWIW. Hey, at least you know I listened to the end. Ha!

This is, indeed, different. the Erhu adds an element of additional mystery. Fretless instruments are so good for that. A dark and thought-provoking lyric.

I think this is the first time I've heard your voice in that high register.

Loved the opening! excellent production!!!

Hi, Scott,

Very different! And very cool, loved the Erhu. Great vocal, could be a bit louder for my tastes. Good write! I read lots of sci-fi back in the day, still have a couple of bookshelves full.

Enjoyed!

Whoa. This is a knock-me-down kinda song. And it sounds great even from the floor. Outstanding vocal, but I just want to turn it up --way up. The bass is cool, but it sounds more like he thought it was a bass player's album. Production is perfect, although I keep reaching for the vocal slider. The bassoon sounds good and very tasteful --a subtly strong addition. I'm really enjoying all the cool pieces you used to build this. So well done, Scott.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks, David. I was auditioning different instruments, and the ehru was the sound I was looking for.

Ron, thanks for listening. I did double track the vocal in the verse (real doubling) and then panned it to one side, made a copy, reversed the pitch modulation (I think that's what it's called), and panned that to the other side. I'll take a listen to the ending to make sure it's what I intended. Thanks for pointing that out.

This is a very adventurous production. It's going to take a few listens to unpack it all, like listening to a David Bowie record.
It brings to mind the various creative ways that governments have eliminated those who are surplus to requirements like the British with Kitchener and the Germans with Romel. Bullets just create Martyrs.
This is entertaining "thinking" music Scott. Well done.

Sounds old, but in a good way... like early David Bowie.
I love the lyrics and your rendition of it, unusual but very interesting, keeps me listening to the end.
Good song!

A really different vocal approach and exactly what the song called for.
Menacing message and atmosphere.
Was '39 too late - for some yes.
Thought provoking.
The oohs are a really good touch.
Fabulous stuff.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Dave. I gave the vocals a little boost. I love a good Bradbury story. Martian Chronicles for sure.

Thanks, Alan. There's a reason you don't hear that high register. Too unnatural. My apologies for assailing your ears.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
