We spent some time years ago exploring the interior of a WWII US submarine.
The confines were overwhelmingly tight -- narrow passages and stooping through door ways.

Here's something else to consider. I'm guessing the life-support systems of that time were barebones and not designed for what we would call comfort.
Most probably the atmosphere was cold, humid and stale, at least while submerged.
