My technique with plugins is turn on Bypass, adjust the plugin controls until I hear a difference, then back off by half.  When I was playing live, and one of the band members or the sound guy would say I was too loud..... I'd go to the amp, act like I was adjusting the volume, but I had already turned the guitar volume knob down..... strum a chord and ask if that was better, they'd say YES, and I'd go right on and turn the guitar back up and they'd give me a thumbs up! Mission accomplished.
