MOURNING JOY

My daughter, Kat, wrote this song in 2009. It's about a close friend whose life was ruined by drugs.
The track I created back then was 100% midi. Recently, she asked me to give the BIAB treatment. Kat wrote the lyrics and the tune. I composed the music for the intro and the instrumental break.

Style is _IMPART.STY (Impart Slow-8ths Mallets Folk)

Words & Music: Kat Raynor-McKay

Mourning your death, but you're still here
Lost along the way
The tide is rising but it won't
Wash away my pain today

Remembering a million tears
Frozen behind your smile
A drug masquerade
Used for a while

When forward I am looking
For someone I can blame
Maybe its you or me or he
Caused you such shame

Instrumental

Mourning your death, but you're still here
Lost along the way
The tide is rising but it won't
Wash away my pain today

Brian, very poignant and beautifully rendered. You and Kat (again) make a great team. Love the guitar break and the way you ended the song. Nicely done!

Brian, what fantastic lyrics. I have lost friends from drugs and/or alcohol so this song hit home.
To nitpick I think your vocal could come up a little. Not a lot but maybe a dB or two.
Nice backing band also.
This is really a great song.

Thanks, DC. It was Kat's idea to end the song with an echo one octave higher.

Brian,

This is so smooth and mixed to perfection. I always enjoy your vocals and this is one of your best.

Kat wrote a gem of a song. And you gave it life. Excellent work by both of you. I'm delighted you're posting again!

Best to you,

Alan

Simple yet beautiful.
I love the lyrics and the way you sing them, and the sparse instrumentation adds a lot to the mood of the song.
Very well done!

Thanks.
Kat doesn't often compose the music for her songs. This is one of those exceptions. It has only four chords through the whole thing which underscores the simplicity of the whole thing.

Oh, Kat, this is so moving. Right from the beginning I had chills of sadness coarsing through me. Your lyrics are so moving. It was a great idea having your dad remake this one.

Brian, what a great rendition. Such a very good vocal --moving and emotional. Excellent choice of instruments and I really like the melody. Just a beautiful song.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Brian...this is a tender yet powerful response to a terrible tragedy...beautiful production...lovely melody...certainly worth the remake.
