There is a much longer version of this story but I'll keep it short:
Met an Englishman travelling on a Greyhound bus with an Eagle pass and book of $50 travellers' checks. He was the only advance man for a new band released on A&M. At a transfer point on Hwy 101 in Oxnard, the liquor store across the street wouldn't cash one of those checks so I gave him a $10 bill telling him to buy a couple sandwiches and beers while I kept a lookout for the bus (this was 45 years ago). He turned me on to a ticket for a show at the Santa Cruz Civic for this new band in their first trip across America.
That is how I saw The Police in the only show they ever opened in the US. The headliner was The Knack. They were ok but the opening act blew me away.
