I still have a copy of Encore, which for my needs (head charts) is adequate.
I also have MuseScore, since it's open source, might be my go-to when Encore fails to work. The open-source crowd is likely to go berserk when MuseScore 5 comes out (next year?). Muse Group has promised that it will be good, something they readily acknowledge that MS4 and previous versions are not.. This means that it will be more like Finale/Sibelius/Dorico and have been on a hiring binge to make it happen. If you’re a notation or AI engineer, they want you and you don’t have to move to Cyprus. It’s a multi-billion dollar company and the acquisition of Hal Leonard last year is the major cog in their plans for world domination. It’s like the Sixth Sense—open source is dead over there but that crowd doesn’t know it yet.

Mike, I believe what you are saying. More and more of the scores on the paid MuseScore One are now 'Official Scores' that you have to pay extra to buy if you want to download them in Music XML or other formats.
I'm not upset by that; I've had a great run finding free music for my chamber orchestra. The new Official Score emphasis means I may start publishing more of my own scores again, since they can be monetized. There may be hope for composers and arrangers in the music business after all.

I don't buy scores, and my needs are simple.
Sometimes just a line of music, perhaps just the song's identifiable figure pasted on a .tif with the words.
At most, a head chart.
Most of what I need are words and perhaps chords, which I don't need a score app for. I find it a lot easier to memorize music than words. But we have about 650 songs in our 'book', and for ones that are rarely played, a little tickle for a signature lick will be enough to jog the memory.
Sometimes we may get a gig for a Luau, Oktoberfest, or other theme party. They require an instrumental that I might play once a year, like “The Hawaiian War Chant” or “Pennsylvania Polka”. For something like this, a Head Chart with arrangement notes is better.
So far, MuseScore 4 does that, and so does Encore. Although, Encore is on an older OS computer.
If I ever would like more, I'll look into other options. But for a few head charts per year, this does fine for me.

I have no issue with any of that and still run Encore on a 12 yr old MacBook Pro. The printed output is ... well, amateurish would be kind but my church groups and casual bands don't mind—and it is still the fastest, easiest notation app out there.
I talk to Don Williams now and then. He was rhe original developer and bought the Encore code back over three years ago. He's still promising Encore 6 but I've given up hope. If 6 was a 64 bit port of 5 with multiple undo and slurs/ties that didn't look hideous, I'd buy an upgrade in a second.
I do my heavy lifting in Finale but may give Dorico a better shot seeing that I've had it since 2018. I use MuseScore a lot since I'm a subscriber to musescore.com but I never do any work in it—everything gets exported to Finale where I change the fonts and fix them. If MuseScore 5 turns out to be good, well that would be nice but I'm not holding my breath — just trying to get stuff done.

He's still promising Encore 6 but I've given up hope. <...> I met him a few years ago. He came out to hear us play, and see what I'm still doing with Master Tracks Pro. He said he was thinking about updating that after Encore, but I've lost hope for that, too. And my alto sax will turn 100 years old next year, still plays, still sounds great, and can still be repaired by any competent woodwind technician. Modern things don't seem to have that longevity. Actually, the intonation is not as good as a newer sax, but it has the voice of an angel. My guess would be denser brass and the silver plate. I don't take the alto to the gig anymore, just my tenor. I can cover alto sax parts on my wind synthesizer. I have a mix of classic and the modern on the gig. Notes ♫
