For me that's a very scary "feature" of windows, only partially addressed by rules for file execution and malware testers.

I often wonder how many Windows PCs have been infected by someone blithely clicking on a file, the real name of which is really ReallyCuteKitten.jpg.exe

And Windows ships by default with file extensions hidden!

Yes, it's a very concerning feature. It can be quite challenging to work with, and, as you mention, potentially very dangerous.
I ALWAYS show file extensions (I can't work any other way.)

I told tech support about the .txt.txt issue. They were very happy to have it resolved. Now if only I could get Apple Music to run instead of iTunes, but my ARM processor prevents it. Grr.

I never used to show file extensions but after this debacle I’m keeping them on permanently. And does anyone have a good alternative to iTunes? Don’t say Spotify, I don’t have a subscription. wink

I'm hoping to get an ARM machine at some point, it'd be good for testing. Having been using an ARM Mac for the last few years, I'd love to get on board with it for Windows.

Heard good things about Clementine, but haven't used it much yet as iTunes still works well for me.

Which version are you on - 2024, or older?

I got Apple Music to run on my Surface. I don’t know that it has an ARM. Apparently it has a snapdragon chip, unless that’s another name for it. Someone posted a command line in Reddit and it installed without a hitch. The speakers alone are incredible. So far, no other issues.

I’m on BB 2021. I’m going to upgrade during their Christmas sale to the new ultra pack.

ARM is a CPU instruction set, while Snapdragon is a series of CPU's from Qualcomm that uses the ARM architecture. There are other brands of CPU that use the ARM architecture, such as the M1 from Apple and the CPU in the Raspberry Pi computers.

Compared to the x86 instruction set in the Core CPU's from Intel (or the Ryzen CPU's from AMD), ARM is very different and incompatible, which requires a translation layer to run any x86 apps (and these are far from perfect).

So, three questions:

Why would Microsoft make their own chip that was incompatible with all of the existing x86 software? Doesn’t that cripple the Surface?

Why would Apple say it’s incompatible when it runs flawlessly?

Microsoft didn't create the chip or design ARM in any way. They simply bought chips from Qualcomm. Presumably MS decided on those chips as they're more powerful and more efficient than comparable x86 chips, or because there are more limitations and legacy support required for x86 (which has been in use since 1978). Most "computers" these days are cellphones or tablets, and nearly all of them use ARM - it's only desktops and laptops that still hold onto x86.

As more computers move to ARM, it will be less of a cripple. Naturally that means that early adopters like yourself pay the price for that, but thankfully it'll only get better.

Likely Apple says it's not compatible because they haven't tested it enough.

Come to the forums for help, learn about computer evolution. Thanks for the reply, I wasn’t aware of any of this. I bought the Surface because it’s fanless and runs cool. It’s been a great choice so far for BB.

Simon, I have 2024 with the latest updates. The access violation was with older versions but was never a real problem just a 'phantom' warning.

Happy to illuminate! Hopefully things go smoothly with the Surface - I'm sure things will advance once Windows on ARM is more popular.

The latest update should fix it for you: https://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm#1113
Alternately, the instructions provided in the thread will work - create a txt file named NoSplashScreen and put it in your Preferences folder.
