My involvement:
I ran a cabaret band for years. We worked 3, 4, 5 and sometimes even 7 nights a week. We got paid. It was rewarding.
I also participated with an internationally recognized organisation where I regularly conducted a program titled: 'Dignity for the Aged'. I typed and printed song books and we would spend countless afternoons, involving and entertaining elderly folk in aged care homes and giving them back a little for what they gave us. I never got paid. It was very rewarding.
No regrets. None whatsoever.
I was rewarded in different ways by everything I did musically. Still am.
