Mono overheads are a stylistic choice when recording for certain genres - definitely a little odd by modern standards, but it can sometimes work better for older genres.
Thanks Simon, I acknowledged that new ones appear but, as mentioned, not in the styles I use...yet.
Mono O/Hs in the same set of "stems" as stereo items is more than odd and makes mixing the stems in stereo VERY difficult which is contrary to the notion of the "stems" in the 1st place. The bigger oddity is that often the "mix" that accompanies the stems has the cymbals, as can only be captured by the Ohs and some spill, in stereo.
I completely understand about older resources and how storage expense was a big issue just a decade ago.
I'm ever hopeful re "stems" but have thrown in the towel on video tracks. Well, I use what I have but won't expect anything new.
