I get what you're saying but I venture to say that much of our perception is governed by what we're used to. If you compare it with other jazz/swing standards of from the 30s & 40s I believe you'll find the vocals are much more to the fore than the way sound mixing is often done today. Even Paul McCartney's vocal in Till There was You is very up-front. In this case, when I pull back the vocals by more than 2db, they tend to be swallowed by the band.
P.S. So far, the feedback from live audiences has been enthusiastic.
