Link: The Sound Of Silence

The plan: a cover version of “The Sound Of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, but
arranged like “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, i.e. piano as the main instrument
and a grand finale with a classical orchestra.

The problem: When about 50% of the song was finished, I heard a cover version of the song on the radio,
by the band “Disturbed”, and they did exactly what I had in mind, even if they avoided vocal harmonies.
And their version is brilliant.
I didn't want to do a copy of the “Disturbed” version (if I wanted to do that, I would do a copy of
of Simon & Garfunkel), but I couldn't find a style that suited the song that hadn't been used umpteen
times before.

The solution: the other day it occurred to me that I have developed my own style over the last 2 years.
Not a good style, but, hey, it's MY style.
All mine!

My apologies to Mr. Simon (and to a lesser extent, Mr. Garfunkel) for the abuse of an otherwise brilliant song.
Enjoy what was originally a great song, written by a great songwriter.

Some technical information:
Style: CMPFMDF.STY

Drums: PraiseWorshipUptempo16
Guitars: 522, 3931, 4388, 4387 and myself
Viola: Viola
Strings, Synths and other shebang: me
Vocals: Goldmania Bella

Thank you, Bob, for listening and for your encouraging feedback.
With covers, I'm always a bit unsure whether I'm doing the song justice or destroying it. blush

B.D., nicely done. Hard to take on such a distinctive classic and add something interesting. But I really like the arrangement and tasteful updates to this classic. I also like that you kept the essence of Paul's harmony lines, which to me are as lovely as Art's lead vocals. Anyway...enjoyed it!

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment, Jim.
I think if I'm shamelessly promoting a song made (mostly) with BIAB, it's only fair to share that information, pretty much like over in the Showcase forum.

Thanks Ron smile
As much as I like Art's angelic voice, Paul's harmony is what makes this song special.
Ever since I first heard this song, I've always been singing along to the harmonies, never to the main melody.

Good version..... I like the groove in the rocking parts.

2 nits, if you will....the one word "planted" sounds a bit unnatural. And the vocals overall, have a distortion that has removed the crispness from the high end. Almost like a tad too much saturation on the vocals.

Giving the vox more top end air would really open up the mix and give it a feeling of space.

Really good work overall.

Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.
You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Thanks, Herb, especially for your detailed feedback.
I just checked a couple pronunciation websites to see what you mean. I think(?) my pronunciation is “plannted” and should be “planted”.
Easy to fix.
If the distortion you're referring to occurs on Paul's vocals, it's intentional, because it didn't cut through in the louder passages without it, at least not the way a simple EQ did.
Art's part is pretty clean (unlike the original).

Thank you again for taking the time to listen and comment.

Oops, missed your answer.

Thanks a lot, Ed.

Honestly, I think there are better covers out there (it's probably one of the most covered songs ever), but your comment still makes me happy.
Very happy smile
