Okay, this was really just for fun. I had these lyrics from literally eons ago and I never really new what style of song would fit, so I played with a Bossa and low and behold it worked. So, I can put this to rest and move on now. I'd love to hear what you (really) think...

https://soundcloud.com/divinemetime/opium-tears

Style is _B140_GB.STY (Contemporary Med Bossa)

RealTracks in style: ~464:Bass, Acoustic, Bossa Ev 140
RealTracks in song: ~773:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm Jazz Sw 110 ('B' Only)
RealTracks in style: ~467:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Bossa Ev 140
Loop in Song: World\Latin - boss120a_rim_brush_kick9 drums ev8.wav
Loop in Song: Percussion Loops\Loop124bpm Guiro 8ths 4 bars.wma
RealDrums in style:BossaBrushes: a: Sidestick Brushes b: Sidestick, Ride
In addition to main vocals with dynamics and reverb and an upper harmony, I used a 6ths harmony from the box (just lazy!).
I also added another Loop: Drum n Bass\Jungle Darkcore_165_c drums ev 16. wav

Opium Tears
Reflected in mirrors
And dreams lie her fears

Relying on someone
Who doesn’t have time
Inspired, affected
While he draws the line

Swimming in oceans
Sweeping away
A day in the life
A life in one day

She’s rehearsed her outburst
with nothing to defend
She’s screaming and he’s held her
or so she’d pretend
But truth be known she’s frightened
And the tears are stuck inside
So she’s waiting out the force of the doubt
So she can push the feelings aside

Further she falls
She opens her eyes
She crawls
Into disguise

Falling away and
Losing all touch
Sunshine and madness
It doesn’t take much

If only he’d say that
He felt the same
He’d send her off
In the sky like a flame

She’s rehearsed her outburst
with nothing to defend
She’s screaming and he’s held her
or so she’d pretend
But truth be known she’s frightened
And the tears are stuck inside
So she’s waiting out the force of the pull
So she can push the feelings aside

In his embrace
It's his smile she feels
within her own face

The Empress card is drawn
It tells no lies
Just like the Lovers
She will learn to fly

Way past the pyramid
And out to the sun
Her heart on fire
With everything one

Beth, hmmm. Well, what do I REALLY think? I think this is weird and beautiful. Know the style is Bossa, but your melody lines take this into another genre, but not one I know. The lyrics are mysterious yet stuffed with intriguing inuendo that give the listener a sideways glance at the situation. LOVE your vocals on this (and everything else). A really enjoyable listen.

FWIW, some of the sung lyrics are different from the posted ones. For example, this verse is sung with lyrics that end as "words" and "birds" instead of "same" and "flame":

If only he’d say that
He felt the same
He’d send her off
In the sky like a flame

FWIW #2, in the 2nd sentence of your post, you may wish to substitute "knew" and "lo".

When it's done for fun you can't argue with that.

It has a nice latin feel to it

Thanks Ron. "Weird and beautiful". I'll take that. Thanks also for the lyric and spell check. That happens when I'm not paying attention.

Bonjour
Je partage les commentaires de DC Ron, c'est un peu inclassable comme style. C'est peut être le mélange bossa, d'un piano swing et d'un chant qui survole la rythmique.
C'est bien d'avoir un style original et personnel. Alors Bravo!

Beth, I really think that this is your best to date.
Outstanding vocal and lyrics, loved those lyrics.
Great backing band and mix.

Hello, Bring Your Own Tilted Halo Band, Beth. Creativity drips from everything your do. Love this. Great vocals, and I really dig that upright bass. Lyrics are so good. Man, I really like the subtle background music. Excellent choices, and a pleasing mix. Okay, here's more of what I REALLY think: You are a wonderfully gifted creative individual that I am glad is living on the planet as the same time I am --and one who is sharing her just-for-fun creations. I think therefore we are.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Excellent song with great instrumentation and mix. Lyrically it's another one I relate to, theme-wise.

I can imagine a small club, open mic night and this one performed on stage. And I would enjoy every moment of it forgetting all the talking around. Reminded me of Norah Jones.

Unique poetic lyrics. Beautiful melody, the chorus is especially nice. And the band supports your pleasant voice perfectly, the humming in the end is lovely. Mix is in balance. Very creative work!

Intriguing title!
I like the rhythm of the lyrics as it complements the bossa rhythm. That and the unexpected turns in the melody make this an engaging song.

EXCELLENT song, fabulous arrangement.
I like, like, like it.
I'm not fussed on the title but that's your call.
My only nit is that, fairly often, you vocal fades on the last note of a line.
Some of those could be bolstered while others make a good affect/affectation for the message.

Cheers
