Hello Again,
I just found I have Cubase LE4. It came on a CD with my Alesis USB Mixer. I've read a few reviews here and there and it seems people like it.
Has anyone here used or use it? I just read a bit of the PDF Docs and it seems pretty good. I just was hoping for a little feedback before I install it.
I use BIAB 2009.5 and PTPA12 on Windows XP.
Thanks in advance, Wayne p.s. (oh, and it has the reverse audio thing I was looking for too)(other thread)

Hi Wayne, I have a copy of LE4 that came with my Zoom R16 recorder. I did install and play with it for a while. I did not have any problem with it besides getting it registered is a real pain. For some reason I could not drag and drop out of BIAB or Realband to LE4 but there are always ways around that. I don't use LE4 anymore so that is the only thing I noticed about it. Brian

I use BiaB 2010 to generate tracks and Cubase 5 to do all my recording, editing etc. I realy love working in Cubase. For me it is has a very logical way of working and it has a nice GUI.
Drag and drop from BiaB does not (yet) work for Cubase. You can however render all the tracks you want to use to a .wav file and drag these files into Cubase (or you could simply import the files).
I wouldn't say Cubase LE4 is a better DAW or an inferior DAW compared to RealBand. It just has a different way of doing things; the workflow is different.
Since you have a legal copy of both DAWs, I'd install Cubase and see for yourself wich DAW you like working with the best.

I like how LE4 handles midi effects. Save your song in Biab as a type 1 midi file and import to LE4 to add your FX etc . . .
Cubase has a huge learning curve, IMO. However, I really like their effects and how they buss them via midi and routing. They really sweeten up a mix. Good luck,
Trax

Thanks Trax, and all,
I started with Cubase when it was just MIDI and I loved it. Atari ST and PC. It had a Dongle. I had no idea I had it on the Alesis disk. The disk label says Ableton. I looked around and found people didn't have much good to say about Ableton Lite.
I'm going to install Cubase LE4. I've been using PTPA for Windows. I did want to try Cubase but didn't have the money. Who knew, I had it hiding on this disk for over a year. That'll teach me. I never looked because I don't use the Alesis Mixer connected with USB. I just plugged it into my Line-In and it was super so I never even put the disk into my computer.
Nice surprise. A lot of people use this and love it. I'm sure I will too.
Thank you all, Wayne

Hi Wayne I used Cubase & BIAB on the Atari ST too. Back then I was a Atari Tech working for a dealer in Las Vegas. One year at Comdex I got to work the Atari booth which Atari had hired Fleetwood Mac to play and demo midi on the Atari ST. They had placed midi pads inside of Micks clothes which triggered various sounds which he did a solo with them on one song. All of the PC folks wandering around the show were blown away. This was when Jack Tramiel who founded Commodore computers owned Atari. Brian

I was a very early user of Atari ST. I bought one when it came out without any software. But came fast and I was thrilled. I owned a Yamaha DX7 and couldn't wait to get into MIDI. Also the OS was the best at the time, at least I thought so. I used my STs for many years. I kept one in my home studio and had Cubase on my PC in my bedroom. Worked on songs at night and just brought them down to my Atari on a floppy and continued. I loved it. Wayne,

Well I tried to install Cubase LE4 yesterday. I worked on it for 4 hours, going round and round the "KEY is already in use. I uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times and then gave up. I sent a support request to them but nothing yet. I searched and found that hundreds of people had this problem but no answers. i'll wait and see what the Cubase people tell me if they ever do. All the advice I found on their boards and others were to do what I'd already done. What a bad activation process. It's like having a new car and no keys.
Wayne, (waiting for a reply from Steinberg)

Trax, I got it installed. Steinberg sent a new number and it loads. But, I can't get any MIDI sound. I use a SB X-fi soundcard, Windows, and the audio works fine. I also use the VSC plugin from PG Music and I can play MIDI through all my software including WMP. But I can't get any MIDI sound out of Cubase? It loads the files, I click play and see them move, but silience. Well I posted on their Forum and sent them another Email. Just a few more hurdles till I start to dig in. I see all the great effects in Cubase. It looks great. Wayne,

Wayne,
LE is Sonar and AI 4 is Cubase. The AI 4 should have come bundled with a GM VSTi set. You select which VST patch you want in each track's buss routing, kind of like how RB handles each port. The FX are also located there as well.
Halion is the VST which came with my AI 4 bundle here. You have to use "add track" then "add instrument" (r-click) where it says not connected. Select Halion/VSC. Then select the patch set up.
We may be talking two separate applications?

I had tried to install Cubase LE on my computer. I ran into all the hassles you did. Their tech supports only answer on how to get it to work was to buy a set of CD's that explained how to make it work. The disk made for a nice frizbie. I nuked it off my computer. I'll take Real Band over Cubase any day of the week. No dongles needed with Pgmusic stuff. If you want to go with big time stuff use Sonar. It's almost like working with PTW but a lot fancier. It's designed to handle outboard equipment where Pgmusic software doesn't. I don't care what software you have. It's the hardware you use that makes the difference in quality. Unless you're going to go into big time recording with several sound rooms, etc., going with expensive and confusing software is a waste of time and money.

Hi Trax, Wayne is using the Steinberg Cubase LE 4 which comes bundled with different hardware. Just a skinny version similar to Sonar LE. Brian

Wayne,
In order to hear MIDI tracks play you need to connect it to a (soft)synthesizer. I'm not at my DAW right now, but on the left hand side of the screen you can choose an input and an output for that particular track. You need to set the output to a VSTi or a hardware synth. After all; MIDI is not sound, it's merely a set of instructions.

redguitars,
I just want to affirm that Steinberg products are worth the effort. They take a lot of learning. I recommend some third-party books such as Cubase Power! and others. The Steinberg documentation is quite complete and tells you how to do 'most anything you need. The other books tell you what to do, and why.
I own an early version of Nuendo, Cubase's big brother, and a newer bundled version of Cubase VST that came with my TASCAM US-224 control surface/interface. C-VST is fully functional, but only has one level of undo. I just do a lot of saves and take good notes. I also work in a friend's Nuendo 4-based studio. We get fantastic results.
Best of luck, and keep asking questions.
R.

Hi Ryszard, Thank you and everyone for your interest in my problem. I got my Cubase forum BB activated and posted the VSC-VST question and got an answer in a few hours. As far as I and Steinberg support can tell, the answer was not to be found but so very simple. Just go to a tab for VST Paths and add the path to VSC-VST Folder and bingo it's on a dropdown list and when you click the little Patch button The Whole Roland VSC Panel pops up and you can set it all.
So thank you all for taking your time for me. Consider this thread solved.
Wayne,

I have both a LE4 & AI4 on my desktop. The LE4 here is Sonar and that is why I asked for clarification No worries, he got his mojo working. Trax

LE means that you 'have a "light" or limited version of the software. There are several software developers that bring a light version of their software. Often these versions are quite adequate and powerful. I know several people who work with Cubase LE4 and they have added some free VST's. They do not feel the need to upgrade to Cubase 5 Studio or Cubase 5 at all; the LE-version does everything they need.

Hi Mike, For a light version this program is not at all what I expected. 25 VST Plugins, You name it it's seems to have it. An easier version would have suited me to learn but, like anything this will take some time. My favorite is still PowerTracks and I'm going to start RealBand soon.
I'm just glad I found it. I had Cubase LE a year and didn't know. It was a heck of a time registering it, but Steinberg came through. I'm still very happy using PTPA 12. Now since I've got the bug again, I have to decide on an inexpensive Keyboard. I need something to make my own MIDI parts. I used to love the Yamaha PSR line, years ago. Great imput device and also was fun as a stand-alone. I love MIDI, mostly to make drum tracks.
I followed the other thread on a Casio. Don't know much about what's out there for me. (not much money) Plus, I don't know if I'll need a MIDI interface since a lot of them plug in with USB. I was very at home with MIDI years ago. Don't know how well USB keyboards work. I'll see.
Again, thank you and all for the time, Wayne, (powertracks-forever) lol
