I changed my DAW recently from Sonar, which I have been using for about 13 years to Cubase.
It has taken me nearly a month to learn the basics and still not sure I made the right decision.
After many failed attempts I settled temporarily for this version of a new song.
Please tell me what it sounds like as It's refusing to let me hear it anymore. crazy

From Cradle To Grave © 2024 Vic Arnold
V1
My life is unwinding way down to the base
Now I just need to find me a comfortable place
to rest from those hard miles, and the years that I gave
on that short trail that leads us from cradle to grave
Ch.
From cradle to grave
Trying to keep true, I did the best I could do
to cling to the crest of a wave.
I ducked and I dived now I've finally arrived
.... All the way from the cradle to the grave
V2
I fell short of the best that I wanted to be
and there's no second chances ahead I can see
But I'm lucky I never was shot down in flames,
scared to take chances
or weighed down in chains

My affairs are in order. My secrets laid out.
But all those I loved were never in doubt.
So I give up my soul to the next on this stage
with my very best wishes while I'm turning the page.

Hi, Vic. I know of what you angst. What were the failures like to you? I like this mix. BRB

First the song. I dig it, Vic. The steady beat continuing with dynamic changes for the choruses and solo works really well. Your vocals are always so good.

To my ears the mix is perfect, everything pleasently spaced and blended as if you used the Goldilocks settings.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Vic, this is a very cool song, and your mix, vocals and harmonies are rock solid. The vocal FX might benefit from some tweaking, as the reverb sounds like it's running over the vocals. (This might be just me, but I used three sound sources for reference) When I hear this in my own stuff, I use a combination of less reverb, more reverb pre-delay, or more presence in the EQ.

Feeling your pain on DAW transition. I moved from Cakewalk to Studio One when Cakewalk folded the first time. Recently spent over a week trying to transition to Reaper but fled back to the safety of Studio One, which is actually quite, well...ok.

Loved your song!

Sounds good Vic. Sounds like it is an unfussy, solid clear mix. Cool song too.

The mix, to my ears at least, is excellent. The song is top-notch, as I've come to expect from all of your songs. That voice of yours resonates better than ever, I think. Nothing to worry about, therefore, I think ... great song.

Hello Vic. Congratulations for your song I really like the guitars and the mix is good. I have been using Cubase since 2020 and at first it was not easy but thanks to a series of video tutorials, I learned things. I use among other things, the chord track and the chord pads, it is quite practical for someone who knows nothing about keyboards.

Cool song. That reminds me a lot of Waylon Jennings and the outlaw music he used to write.

On my buds, it sounded pretty decent. No real big issues.

Kinda wondering though why you decided to move from Cakewalk to Cubase. Years ago when I was first getting back into digital recording after a few years away due to reasons not pertinent here, I had both Cake and Cubase LE on my computer and decided to go with Cake.

Hi Marty.
Well, the failures were everything from distortion to dirty.
I was about to give up and go back to Sonar but thought, well if others can learn it so can I.
You boosted my confidence now.

Hi DC.
I bought my current version of Cakewalk Sonar X1 Producer just before Cakewalk folded and got to love it's ease of use.
Either Cubase is much more complicated or I'm too set in my ways. Some of the effects are harder to understand. Time will tell.
I have changed some of those settings now as per your suggs. Fingers crossed.
Thanks.

I envy you, your skills. In the song, you have exactly as many instruments as there should be and no extras, and listening to just the accompaniment is cool for time the whole song, I really enjoyed it. I kneel before singing, beautiful voice color and yet your seemingly simple technique seems to have an apparent effect, but in my attempt to sing it, I would have trouble giving it like you. You are better off than me, although I am satisfied with the DAW ( Studio one ), my hand-made mix is not always satisfactory and I prefer to go with it to a friend who owns a studio and is a top sound engineer, and he will complete the mix and then the mastering for me , that it satisfies me and I dare to put it on SoundCloud. Enjoy your song, it is truly beautiful.
I am translating from Czech to English via Google translator, so I don't know if you understand everything.

Thanks James.
My vocal tone never sounds right to me. Maybe I'm over critical.
I appreciate your words on that subject.

Thanks for chipping in, Guitar Hacker.
I was indeed influenced by Waylon on this.
I would have stayed with Cakewalk Sonar as it's a lot easier to use but they stopped updating and are still on VST2.
There are VST3 plug ins I want to try so sadly I have to move on.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
