Sad but unsurprising given the trends in print media. Had a subscription back in the day and would read it cover to cover. Thankfully, I did not load the many terabytes of free sounds onto my hard drives...

Guitar Player Magazine is done too after 58 years in print form. I subscribed to it for many years going back to the 70's .
I still have a few of my favorite issues from back then, and have some in frames up on the wall in my studio. Jeff Beck cover from December 1973 is one, cost then was $.75!

Not the only one to go, Guitar Techniques is closing its door as well, browsing Guitar Techniques and all the musical riffs and example I often wondered how many people actually learned them, probably not a lot and not me anyways.

I suppose in the end they just coped on, it was a lot of work for no return, except getting the price of the mag back.

Sorry to hear that Computer Music is going though.

I used to advertise my Band-in-a-Box add-on products in that magazine, along with Music&Computers, Electronic Musician, Keyboard, and Guitar Player. As an advertiser I got free subscriptions, and enjoyed that. I subsibed to Electronic Musician (EM) before I started advertising, and in the early days, I learned a lot about making music on a computer thanks to that mag.

But the trade mags collapsed or went on-line and then went belly-up. As the classified ad sections got smaller and smaller, and less relevant, I quit advertising.

Being an advertiser, I got free subscriptions to a few other computer magazines that weren't even music related, and that I definitely never asked for. I remember getting IT magazine, and not knowing it stood for Information Technology.

But the golden age of magazines is long gone. The information we waited to come in our mailbox every month is now availble at the tip of our mouses (mice? does that still work with comuputers).

There are things I miss about the magazines when I think about it, but I suspect it's just nostalgia.

Print media as a whole has been greatly affected by the internet. I saw the demise of one of my customers as the internet became a thing. A local newspaper with over 120 people working full time, to a pared down staff of essential people, to subcontracting the printing process to another larger paper with a press, to selling the press and relocating to a smaller office with a bare minimum staff to keep the website current.

I used to subscribe to Guitar Player magazine. I kept every single issue for well over a decade. As the articles declined in length and depth, and more advertisements filled the pages, I made the decision to stop reading it. I ended up selling the collection as a whole to someone who wanted the issues. I think I broke even on that deal. That was back when they were putting a 33rpm record in the magazine. I learned a lot from those magazines but it was time to move on.

Yes, they were nice references, but after the Internet, before they crached, the articles just seemed to turn into covert advertisments. I guess they were just trying to survive. And I do remember the little flexible records.

I used to subscribe to Guitar Player magazine.

Me too. That started as the in-house organ for Guitar Showcase in San Jose where I dropped many a $ in my youth and was then published in Cupertino a couple miles from where I live now (I rent my San Jose house to SJSU music students nowadays). Anyway, I was in a used bookstore near San Jose State and found a volume binder containing the first six years of GP — my junior high and high school years for $5! I read and reread those for quite a few years before selling them for a substantial profit.
