One Night In Chi-Town - Remastered

I posted this one 7 or 8 years ago. It's one of the favorite instrumentals I've put together over the years I've been here. It's all BIAB. I no longer have a list of the tracks, but as I mentioned, it's all BIAB . I'm playing nothing on it. I simply remastered the final stereo WAV file, which I found recently - but there was no additional info with it.

Most of you already know about Di's recent medical emergencies, so won't repeat all of that. Just that she's home and relatively stable. I've not had any time for composing new stuff since she's come home from the hospital, so I hope you don't mind me posting an old one once in a while for the near future.

I'm listening to your music as often as I can, but I seriously doubt I'll be able to get to everyone's recent posts - but I'll listen and comment every chance I get.

Ya'll take care.

Alan

PS: The piano gets a little loud in a couple of places, but I EQ'd it down quite a bit from the original and lightly compressed the entire song.

Alan,

Glad to hear Di is stable. You are both in my thoughts.

Love this piece. The new mastered version is great. Clear, present and it has a very cool "live" feel.

Excellent!

Hello Alan
It's a jazzy style that I like a lot with a very beautiful guitar in front.
The best for you and your wife.

What a wonderful tune for jamming. Cool stops, contagious swing, and I like how the bass walks out in parts. Very dynamic arrangement, Alan.

Love to you two!!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Alan,

As I've been away I did not know about Di's health issues. Please know I will be praying for her healing and comfort and guidance for you both!

I agree with Marty's assessment. Typically, since I am a lyricist addict, I rarely listen to full instrumental posts in this forum, however, this one caught my fancy immediately and I enjoyably stayed for the whole performance.

You are the KING of BIAB instrumentals.
Not a hair out of place.

A true delight for the ears.

...of course, I have no hair and these ears are older than they have ever been.
So take that with a grain of alcohol....

Hi Alan,

Even though we don't know each other, I sympathise with your family situation because we're also going through a complicated ordeal, my wife's cancer and the chemo sessions she started a fortnight ago... You absolutely have to keep on playing music because it's an outlet for all the stress that comes with it. I really like what you're doing, this track but also ‘Bourbon county stop’ (I love bluegrass) and ‘In the corner’ to name but a few! Excellent tracks!

This is a super BiaB performance, maestro! Those lead lines that combine single notes, octaves and chords are really cool, and I've never heard them before, or at least not like this. Very crisp mix and nicely crafted musical journey. Much enjoyed!

So glad to hear Di is doing relatively well. Hope you are looking after yourself, too. Take care, Alan!

That's really excellent smooth, cool jazz, Alan, but just reading your post made me think of this as it might be useful for Di, particularly the final part about chatting up your immune system as done regularly it works. This is a shortened, edited version of an FB post I wrote in 2016 on what can be called either self-observation or energetic field meditation:
=======
… The relaxation technique is very simple. You can do it laying down on the floor or in bed, or seated in any way which is comfortable for you. When seated, you first anchor yourself in your pelvis and butt. You basically next go through the entire body, initially very slowly, starting with the toes then working up to the pelvis; then from fingers to upper arms; then from the waist up in stages to the shoulders, the neck, the facial muscles and whole head. You can start with fingers first or whatever suits you.

Taking it from the toes, you relax them and feel the tension in the muscles 'evaporating', initially taking this very slowly, but also of great importance is to feel the energy within the toes. You next move on up the feet, the ankles, calves, and so on, but always keeping your attention on the energy you feel as bit by bit you become aware of your entire energetic presence. In the 90s I taught this to individuals and twice I had people say re the energy or sensation, "But that's just the nerves." I then reminded them that amputees still feel pain, itches and other sensations in the missing limbs, so it's clearly not just the nerves. Once the whole body is entirely relaxed and you can feel your entire energy field, you can then centre your awareness in the solar plexus - you make that your centre - and then you easily (meaning without concentration) scan around your body with your amazing perception and you slowly begin to perceive the currents in the field. By doing this thoughts tend to still themselves - more so over time of course as you get used to the process - while in other systems most people really struggle to attain or keep a still mind. A good sign of progress is feeling a tingle in the solar plexus, and even a kind of pulse. You'll also feel the energetic link and flow between that and the heart centre. Many people can feel very centred in the heart, but the energy flow is upwards from the solar plexus. …

People tend to think of qi or prana as being exotic and difficult to perceive, when in fact it's ludicrously ever present experientially, but we don't perceive it because our frontal awareness is continually projecting all reality externally. Humans are always missing what is primary as the ego - the focal point of externalising consciousness - is always fixated on the secondary. …

I'm so used to the above techniques that as soon as I wrote "Taking it from the toes, you relax them" I felt mine instantly twitch as the tension was released - I can feel it now just writing this - and I can get into my entire energetic field within seconds. In bed at night I do this, plus I chat up my immune system, calling it 'gorgeous' and 'wonderful', etc, as it's always doing such a miraculous job 24/7, plus most of it is non-human micro-organisms doing the labour. I'm sure that's one reason I'm very rarely ever ill. In early spring I had a one day long minor cold which was gone the next, but the last real cold I had was sometime prior to 2006. Another important point which Tolle points out is that is that wherever on or in the body you place your attention it revitalises the cells.

Although I now have typical ageing problems I've only had one cold since 2016.

I wasn't in the forum when you first posted this all those years ago, so I'm glad you reposted.
Cool track. I felt like I was sitting in a jazz lounge sipping a cocktail.
Glad to hear the Di is stable and at home.

Thanks Bob. Sure do appreciate those very kind words. The remaster brought the drums a little more forward and gave the bass a less boomy sound, yet more than enough to carry the load.
Many thanks.

Thank you very much for your very sincere comment. Mine and Di's heart goes out to you. We wish the very best outcome for your wife - and you, too. My wife had it very difficult. Myself, our son, and our granddaughter were all diagnosed with cancer within 45 days. My wife had all that on her mind, plus her own medical issues. Our granddaughter and I are doing 12 years later, and it looks good for the future. We wish your wife everything good. She has you for support, so she's in good hands. We'll pray for her.

Thank you for the very kind words on those songs. That means a lot. We appreciate it very much.

Hopes and prayers for your wife - and your family.

Alan

PS: Feel free to contact me by PM if you would like to do so.

Man, I'm sure glad you posted this again. Like Scott, I wasn't around the first time you put it on. It's easy to see why this would be one of your favorites. These tracks really come across well together, and you sure have the magic touch when it comes to this stuff. I understand the business taking care of Di, and I'm sure glad she's doing a little better now. Your efforts are much appreciated in both the medical and musical world.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
