Hi everybody,

FAQ #28 states :

"Starting with Band-in-a-Box® 2004, you can import and play an entire MIDI file by using File | Open MIDI file(F7). Band-in-a-Box® will import the MIDI file into the Melody track, convert the Melody track to a multi-channel track so that it can play more than one instrument, and automatically disable the style (accompaniment)."

BUT my BIAB 2024, doesn't work this way :
- I can open a MIDI file, but not with F7,
- when it loads, it's not in the Melody track, it seems that the the entire file is loaded in a random track. It plays but I can't figure a way to conver it to a multi-channel track.

It may come from my bad command of English, so here is what I want to do :
- load a MIDI file, I know how to do it but into an other track,
- then convert it to a multi track set where I can change each track to a real track.

Can you help ?

This could be related to the MIDI file format being used. MIDI Type 0 has all channels on one track. MIDI Type 1 uses different tracks for each channel.

Use File > Open Special > Open MIDI file. The shortcut keys are the letters S S 9 <Enter>

There is more description about the two types at this link:

It’s been so long since I did this, but I recall a green Sequencer icon that separated out a Type 1 MIDI file.

You should import the Midi file rather than open it. Opening a Midi file loads all of the file channels onto the Melody Track and the user has to manually move channels to BIAB Mixer Tracks.
Importing a Midi file separates the Midi file channels and loads them onto individual Utility Tracks.

F7 has been repurposed, the FAQ is out of date.

Also, opening a MIDI file is now done via File->Open Special->Open MIDI File.
The FAQ is also out of date on that; A quick check opening a MIDI file by that method also doesn't seem to behave as the FAQ suggests! (Sheesh!).

Charlie's method works quite well, either from File->Import->Import Melody from MIDI File
or Melody->Edit Melody Track->Import Melody from MIDI File

Using Charlie's method you can set the BIAB destination tracks for the various MIDI source tracks.
