Classic rock fans. We caught this 1977 high-energy North London taping of The Who last night. It was one of the last public performances of Kieth Moon. They played most of their anthems in true Who form. Apparently, this concert, filmed on 35mm, was locked in someone’s vault for years and then “discovered”, remastered and then broadcasted. Closer to home for me, "The Ox" was not only a phenomenal bassist but he collaborated with Hiwatt and Sunn to push the development of bass amp design. He experimented with “Bi-amping” where the high and low ends of the bass signal were sent thru separate signal paths for greater control contributing to his distinctive sound. Well done . . . I need to sign up & sign in to PBS...bummer. PBS buys and broadcasts many recorded concerts. Earlier this year they aired a Chicago concert that was phenomenal. Another notable one was a Pink Floyd tribute band called Brit Floyd complete with female background singers that some would say had more interesting arrangements and guitar solos than the original band! Last week we caught Whitney Houston filmed in South Africa. And then you have many other high quality concerts like the Willie Nelson birthday bash, Santana and Olivia Newton-John, man that gal could sing! Years ago I recall a Steeley Dan concert which caught me by surprise as I thought they were only a studio band. There are two ways to access this content. 1. Free, during their fund raising events (this is how we catch them) 2. Paid, via their on-demand Passport streaming platform (we're considering this so we can watch and re-watch at our pleasure) To be sure, I love my Pandora but there's nothing like watching these artists and band members from the comfort of your couch  Almost forgot, to my knowledge these concerts are also available on DVD from PBS.

Every year when PBS does their fundraising event, this lasts several days, they always show some really good concert events interspersed with obnoxious moderators blathering on about donating. Anyway, they did a full WHO concert one year. It was quite exceptional and served to remind me of just how good The WHO actually was back in the day. You can find a lot of full length concerts on YouTube that don't require a sign in and a contribute to the cause requirement. Only one of several

You can find a lot of full length concerts on YouTube that don't require a sign in and a contribute to the cause requirement. While PBS broadcasts do have concert moderators that can be bothersome, we always keep the mute button handy. And those fundraising breaks are perfect for refilling the popcorn bowl. Plus, PBS offers unique content you won't find elsewhere. There are many ways to consume content. YouTube on a computer screen is certainly one option, albeit with its own equally annoying ads and at times, low quality audio and video. Everyone has their own set of preferences and constraints; to each his own. For us, the overall quality of YouTube videos (or any PC-delivered content) pales in comparison to listening and viewing in our living room. The differences between a computer screen and a large smart TV, the comfort of a spacious living room versus a cramped studio, and the overall quality of the original content all are important to us. The biggest difference for us is the home-theater audio setup in the living room which is vastly superior to the pair of small studio monitors in the studio. Each tool and setting has its role and purpose. I understand that not everyone has these same options available, and some will have setups and options we don't have. We find PBS to be a great option in our portfolio, and I understand that Passport offers even more flexibility and choice.

I suppose in the strictest adherance to history this isn't really Rock Music. Back then, a lot of youth divided into two camps, "Mods" and "Rockers" and there were frequent clashes, often quite viloent. The Who were definitely Mods. The styles of music from the two factions were different, though The Who probably sounded closest to Rock, and 50 years after the fact I doubt anyone too much minds. It brought to mind a story, though. I used to live in a relatively isolated area and travelled by motorcycle ... black leathers or Barbour, tough boots, typical "Rocker". One evening on the way home I saw a Mod in the usual Parka coat at the side of the road peering at his scooter .. lights and mirrors everywhere. As I said ... relatively isolated and it was winter, so I pulled in near him. He took one look at me and ran off, jumped over a hedge. I called after him and said I'd stopped to help, not to cause trouble. He came back cautiously, I helped him fix the problem and got him home. We became covert friends ... I guess I can admit that now. 
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.

We’ve watched PBS music content for decades. They had a great Joe Bonamassa concert last year. We also watch Austin City Limits and other content. And we have a premium ad free YT subscription. What’s a few bucks a month for no ads. Skip a restaurant visit and you’ve got it. 😀 We keep a large private playlist of YT artists we enjoy listening to and watching. By subscribing to scores of channels we can update our list frequently. Then every evening we watch an hour or so. And, yeah, on a 50” screen with Polk Audio speakers and a Yamaha sub. Spotify fills in during the daytime with its amazing algorithms that offer us every day stuff we much like and have never heard. Having our songs on many Spotify playlists also exposes us to new tunes. OK BT sorry to ramble off the Who topic. They were my introduction in the 60’s to power chords!

Bud Hey Bud, no ramble at all. Your posts are always info-packed, and I learn a lot from you. Joe Bonamassa? Here's my war story on him. Years ago, I'm flipping thru the channels and I stumble across this guy playing top-shelf blues-rock. It was Joe on PBS; I had never heard of the guy before. He and his band are phenomenal. And I recognized his drummer, he may have been Johnny Carson's drummer but I know this guy's face from somewhere. You never know who you'll be introduced to. After the concert I created a dedicated station for Bonamassa on Pandora. Over the years, 4 or more different Bonamassa concerts must have been broadcast on PBS. I remember one at Red Rock and another where there was a lot of behind the scenes footage of him talking about his gear and his band. He also talked about his efforts to keep the blues art-form alive in the younger generations; great stuff. But what I really found interesting is that there was some footage from when he was a kid, probably taken by his parents. The footage showed him at 12 or 13 walking into a guitar vendor's booth at what looked like a trade show of some kind. The kid sat down with one of the vendor's guitars and just shredded the place! If he wasn't a child prodogy, he certainly was very talented at that tender age. One of my favorite songs of his is Dust Bowl; soaring lead guitar and a rock solid bass line. So you like YT TV. Any thoughts if you had to choose between that and Passport? PS> Just last night we caught another concert; The Violent Femmes with the Milwaukee Symphony. Once again, we had never heard of this band. One guy in the orchestra was playing this huge sax, the thing towered over him and must have been 7 feet tall !

Passport via the PBS channel does have many more options of what to watch. Subscribing to PBS via a streaming service does not offer the passport required videos. I find it annoying as, in effect, I am paying PBS via my streaming service. So we only listen via PBS to the free videos. We are very happy with YT TV. It has all we want and unlimited storage to save present and future shows, episodes, etc. We gave up Directv for it 2 years ago. We have no cable option. We are HUGE Joe Bonamassa fans and have been for years. IMHO the Live At The Greek Theater show is the best of the best. I put right up there with some of the old Fillmore East shows as being the best live music I've seen. The entire show, song by song, is available on YT. Do you visit the website or an actual AXS subscriber? I visit the website sometimes. If a subscriber how do you stream it? Landline Internet? Cable? Satelite? I originally viewed by satellite, now over cable.

The three Australian background singers are each stars in their own right. Kirk Flechter, guitar, is renown. The trumpet horn guy is a well known producer. The best of the best! Many thanks for the YT TV info/endorsement; we'll look into it further. Ahhh, the Letterman show . . . I knew I knew that guy from somewhere . . . silly me, the Johnny Carson drummer would have gone too far back in time. And this might be obvious to longtime musicians (which I am not) but I'm learning that it's not enough to have just one brilliant musician in the band if you want longterm success. That one guy (whoever he/she may be) needs near-equals if not absolute musical equals in their own domain and instrument. It just takes one semi-weak link in the chain to have a so-so band, especially when playing live. I'm guessing that especially when a band reaches a certain success level, that the entire band (not just the front man/woman) is deeply involved in the auditioning process when a new member is needed.
