I am a looooong time user of BIAB, however I have never run it on a laptop.

So I have just bought a new fast laptop Win 11 Zenbook and successfully downloaded it . I have it working in MME but the latency is way too high at over 100 ms. I need this down to about 4 -6 msec. There is a RealTec Asio driver on the machine, but when I load it Band in the box will not play the chord track freezes.
Are people still using external Asio devices these days? If so what would be a good quality portable solution? I dont need anything for my studio but I do not want to unplug my Focusrite.
Is there another solution? What is the best way to go?

thank you

Z

You can use Voicemeeter with VB Cable or ASIO4All

With Voicemeeter you set VB-Cable as an input, set the RealTek as the output A1, set windows to VB-Cable, set Biab to Voicemeeter ASIO and DAW to Voicemeeter AUX ASIO

Thank you, which one is the best? Asio 4 All has been around decades, it used to be a bit wonky- is it better now?
Is this the standard way of doing things, presumably modern on board sound iss good enough without an additional sound device these days?
Want to do things the best way... I shall be using this i n a rehearsal studio

Is there a reason why you don't want to try WAS (Wasapi) driver in BIAB, which is native to most realtek on board soldered soundcards?

Under WAS the latency was 30ms. I have been through to PG who simply said buy an audio interface and would not take it further. It may be impossible to simply use Asia and no audio interface.

ZeroZero,

When you use your laptop at the rehearsal studio, are you using Band-in-a-Box to record, playback or both? Is a mixer available at the rehearsal studio?

If you run the laptop's audio output of Band-in-a-Box into a mixer and have the other instrumentation or vocals running through the same mixer then you should be able to have one of the mixer audio outputs go into your laptop as a stereo mix. Then you can use RealBand, Audacity or any other recording program to record the incoming stereo mix.

Many mixers have a USB connection to the computer that doesn't use the laptop computer's built-in audio. Instead the computer considers the USB connection to be an audio interface with both audio in and out.

Thank you all for your replies.
For clarity, I just want to playback amplified biab sounds from the laptop, at this stage, but I just wanted to set it up for future recording too. I am asking if it is possible to use Biab and get sounds out of the laptop into a PA. Mini Jack to either 2 XLRs or Jacks, for stereo. There are two hurdles, first Biab freezes for me on my win 11 Zenbook. It’s core i9 and has 32 go of Ram so it’s not the laptop. Second is the issue of the cable. The mini jack outputs unbalanced power (I have now learnt) and either the laptop has to be near the PA and go into an unbalanced input or , I think there has to be some kind of stereo DI box.
There is a third option I am now thinking about, tonight, this is to send the signal out of the laptop into my keyboard, a NordStage 4, and then out from there to the PA through the outputs of the Nord. This is only possible if Biab can be made to run Asio. The Nord has a few options.
I want the laptop in front of me. I just loaded Cubase on it too and will be using a Rhodes VST and maybe other sounds - independently from BIAB.

I have found out that unbalanced cables should be short. I am. Ot conceded about recording into BIAB

As I lie awake at 3am, I am realising that as long as I do not need to record into BIAB, then I think I can get away with WAS. For some weird reason, that I cannot fathom, MME is not outputting to the laptops headphone Jack (!) . I can hear sound out of the laptop speakers but not when the headphone Jack is in. Typical BIAB dodginess.
I just do not see why I cannot run Asio4all on a laptop, without a further device.
I have not yet tried other options like voicemeeter. I may well do. I am just trying other possibilities

I may well end up buying another Audio device, but I don’t see why logically.asio is so hard.

Thanks for the replies.

FWIW, I gave up trying to use the output from laptops a long while ago. Minijacks are none too reliable and there are quite often sound quality issues, particularly if you have to run the laptop from the mains supply. I use an external for BiaB sound.

A different thought, though. Can you use the Nord as a MIDI GM sound generator and skip the audio from the laptop? The MIDI sounds from my Kawai are better then most PC virtual synth, though not as good as RealTracks of course.

Z,
the $3 Realtek chip that is soldered on to motherboard obviously will not have same features / performance of audio interface.
Did you try to use Wasapi exclusive mode? (I believe you set this option is in Windows settings for onboard Realtek).
If that doesn't work, try Asio-for all.

If that doesn't cut it, there are some neat external compact solutions. My all time favorite compact interface is - Apogee ONE. Great headphone pre-amp and nice large input / volume dial. It even has a mic built in. I believe it's no longer produced, but usually available pre-owned at fair prices. There are others, even smaller ones interfaces available.

Thank you all,
I have partially solved this. Enough to my satisfaction, by lateral thinking. Using a minijack to minijack cable I can input the sound from the laptop's minijack to my Nord Stage 4, via the female minijack "monitor" input of the Nord. Worked immediately.

This is great, as I no longer need to think of long additional cables for the laptop and can have my laptop right on top of my Nord, for full control.

I can see no way of using Asio with Band in a Box, without buying a further interface for gigs. I don't want to dismantle my Focusrite 18i20 from my home studio PC setup. I shall therefore simply give up on this.

I shall use Cubase for recording

Thank you all

Z

It occurs to me that right-angle mini-jacks may be less prone to damage than the usual straight plugs.

In my experience ASIO4All causes more problems than it solves. I would suggest an interface with its own bespoke ASIO driver (I often find folks selling used Presonus and Steinberg interfaces for fairly cheap), or if you have to use the onboard audio card I'd suggest trying FlexASIO over ASIO4All.

As long as you're not recording in Band-in-a-Box setting Band-in-a-Box's audio driver type to MME or WAS should work fine. Latency is an issue you encounter ONLY when you are recording. Latency is almost never an issue during playback.

Microsoft has updated WAS several times and it is much more stable for playback and recording than it was in past times.

I have now got Asio4all working on my Zenbook. The interface is obscure and hard to read, but more by luck than anything else I have succeeded. I now have low latency in both Cubase and BIAB. It feels like about 3-4 m secs, which is playable here.
