Hi, have registered specifically to ask this question - me and my partner are going insane trying to think of this song that we heard a few weeks ago, and hoping somebody can help?!
She remembers that the album cover may have been a woman in a blue/turquoise dress, with three guys, or similar.
And sorry, but all we have are the notes that I figured out by playing on the piano - it's quite distinctive, it's a kind of 'jingle', like how the piano sounds when they play it in the movie 'Big'. Here it is...
a#, g# f#, f d#, f# g#, c# (commas are brief pauses, so the middle pairs of notes are in quick succession)
It's very distinctive when you play/hear it.
I know this is a shot in the dark but if this rings any bells for anybody, please help!
Thanks!

Not Fly Me to the Moon, but it does share those notes! Also, that sequence repeats about three times in succession. It's very chirpy. It's not actually the piano, not sure how you'd describe it, like a cross between the piano and the triangle I guess!

Alas, no it's not a piano piece, but an old 'soft pop' song from, I'm guessing, the '60s.

Walking down and up Key of B - How about Fly Me to the Moon - Do I win a prize? Not with an f (unless you were given a different key of B than I was). OP, are you sure the 'f' wasn't an 'e'?

Hi I'm pretty sure it's an 'F' (I remember that part as being more 'major' than 'minor', of that makes sense), but on substituting the 'F' for an 'E', it is possible that I mis-remembered it. It's an extremely distinctive melody. I'm sure it's how the song starts, but again, it may have come in after 20 or 30 secs. A better way of describing the 'instrument' - it's like those little metal music boxes you'd get in Xmas crackers, place on something hollow and turn the handle.

Is it something like the below? I don't have a clue, just trying to help someone home in on it .. http://masteringmatters.com/stuff/mysterysong.wavfaster, slower? (I used the 'f' you originally stated)

Almost precisely that! Definitely close enough that anybody who knows the song would get it instantly from that.
It repeats that two or three times, with the final c# leading straight back into the intlitial a# again.
The rest of the song (as we remember it) is more traditional of the '60s period, but that little intermittent melody is a very prominent part of it, to the point that neither of us can recall much (if any) of the rest of the song, and certainly can't think of any lyrics.
There's another possible variation it could be after thinking about it...
The original -
a#, g# f#, f d#, f# g#, c#
The variation -
a#, g# f#, f d#, c# b, c#
Small change, and I think somebody would still get it from the original, but could be the second one also!

It may even alternate between the two. TBH, with the 'f' in there it was probably written with flats as opposed to sharps, starting on Bb instead of A#, which is why I asked about the 'e'.
If written in sharps, the 'f' would likely have been an 'e', if written using flats, the 'f' makes sense.

It's not a 'well known' or popularised song/melody. What rharv has produced up-thread is pretty much exactly how it sounds!
I've tried the Shazam-esque suggestion above but it was out of ideas as well...
I would guess it's from the era of Jefferson Airplane and The Seekers if I had to. Definitely not either of those though!

P.s. rvarv, on re-listening, it's about 25% slower than what you've produced, but wouldn't impact somebody recognising it if they knew it

Based on evidence you have provided ie notes, bands era, I'll take another shot and suggest "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum. Perhaps a cover version using different instruments. This enthralling forensic exercize raises two points: 1. I have too much time on my hands 2. I need someone to solve it so that I can get some sleep tonight ░I░z░z░y░

Afraid it's not that! rharv's link above is an upload they've created, and it sounds almost identical to what it sounds like in the song. Maybe worth a listen if you want to have another try at it?
I'm sorry - I've managed to annoy a few friends and family already with it haha
