Re mixing, the 'secret' is not to have any tracks in any part of the music which aren't necessary, or where they are necessary to have the right gains and channel biases so that each instrument sound separate. Mixing and arranging I can do well, but I'm crap when it comes to mastering as whatever I try, mostly after doing web searches for instructions and hints, never sounds as good as the raw. Even when just adding reverb to solo instruments I always prefer the original.
