Hi all,

Does BB contain any programs that allow ear training for particular progressions given a particular starting chord ?

Ideally, such a program would do something similar to what the ear-training interval programs do. For example, include progressions that use chords having:
1.) roots only
2.) diatonic only
3.) extensions
4.) altered chords

Hints that allow - maybe play the bass notes only.

If BB doesn't have such a program, can anyone recommend a program that comes close ?

And while we're on the topic - how important do you feel it to "master" single-note ear training vs. training your ear to hear progressions ? My guess is there are many musicians that can play by ear over progressions that may not be experts in single-note interval identification....

Well the larger question is for those that haven't made music a career, which type of ear training and how much of it is best to get the most bang for buck to progress one's song-learning and soloing skills ?

TIA,
Joe

You can start with
https://www.hooktheory.com/theorytab/common-chord-progressions

Make a Spotify or YouTube playlist for each progression store the songs that use the progression in the playlist
Listen a lot to a playlist for at least a week and note where the changes occur

It's been a long time since I've used it, but you could check out GNU Solfege:

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

What an interesting site and suggestion on how to use it for progression familiarity. Thank you so much for posting this site and idea!

Band-in-a-Box has ear training tutorials.

Start at "Window" and navigate to "Ear Training Window" or use the keyboard shortcut Control + Shift + J to open the "Ear Training Window".

There is a nice little app that helps with ear training in the google play store, Perfect Ear that I just bought, they had a Christmas special on so just a few pounds or dollars.

This video has song examples for the progressions being demonstrated

The progressions are named with Roman numerals, which is something you should get used to doing as it will make it easier to transpose to any key

If you scroll down on this site you will eventually find a chart that will make transposition easier
