Have to then open style picker and reselect same style, then render and the song generates fine.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong behaviour!

ReturnTo Factory Defaults may fix it.
File->Save Special->"Save Song with Patches and Harmony" (Alt-F2) may be a workaround.
Silence on opening is also highly suspect.
Options->Preferences->Arrange has an option, upper right, to use a your choice of style as a default. (mine is set to ZZJAZZ.STY, which may be the default.)

Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.
