I often ask CHATGPT some music questions. For example, what notes are included in a certain chord, why can the next chord be this chord? I can basically get good answers.
I’ve been a Scaler user since the initial launch. While I am excited about Scaler 3, I just recently started using BIAB and I gotta say Scaler 3 is just a bit less attractive to me now lol.
Its nice that Davide is pushing Scaler limits...and price I am sure will be fair, however I am not too impressed. Since early days I've seen Scaler as more of an educational / exploration tool, but recent shift focuses more on multitrack abilities instead of more theory, complex harmonies, chord relationship etc. I will likely upgrade, as price would be discounted for Scaler 2 owners and there is some stuff of interest, but honestly, I expected a bit more in a different direction.
I find a much lesser known Cognitone's Spark a much better tool for chord/harmony exploration. I think it also has generative and binding abilities, but I never use them.
I like Cognitive Harmonizer for looking for chords options to fit a specific melody. I was hoping Scaler 3 could do the same.

I have a very cute video I did that I want to show you all. But, due to a beta tester confidentiality clause, I can't release it until after Scaler 3 is released So stay tuned here for release of my on-air ah-ha moment captured on video.
Scaler 3 is scheduled for release in 3 days, on March 25th, 2025.
Congrats on the beta testing. I assume you like it. Is it a game changer in terms of workflow? The teaser videos lead you to believe that.

Hello Jeff, thanks for asking. But I can't say too much about workflow at this time. After my wife passed away last fall, I went back to work after being retired for 3 years. So I no longer have the time for my music I had. My beta testing of Scaler 3 was pretty minimal as a result. But to tell you the truth, I update Scaler, just like I update BIAB, Reaper and a few other apps when ever available. These are essential tools for me when I do find time for my music. Oh and did I mention, upgrade available for $29.

Hey Double D (DrDan), I bought Scaler 1 and 2 (I think based on your recommendations) and I have played around with them but never really figured out how to make any good use of them! But, I'm sitting here with $29 of my kids' inheritance, wondering if you'd recommend Scaler 3 to me? I mean, as a practical matter, what is another $29 gonna matter to my offspring anyway?
Coming in Scaler 3.1 May 14 2025, Scaler 3 Support
... some features confirmed for Scaler 3.1 Include: Main Track Live Sync - Syncs Main track across instances and DAWs Batch User Chord Set Import - Ability to import several XML files at once and choose destination folder Custom VST Folder Paths Play Bar in MIDI Editor Drag and Drop MIDI / Audio files Standalone ASIO Support
Well it has been a difficult launch to say the least. Very similar to BIAB in December each year. But the developers are digging in to address the reported issues. Still can't drop and drag chords between BIAB and Scaler, but Scaler is enhancing this feature in 3.1. And, I can report that midi chords drop and drag between Scaler and the BIAB VST is working. Standalone should have never been release without ASIO, but they will now have that fixed.

Not to mention they took away real-time chord recognition from the main screen. (They told me they may bring it back. I think it belongs on the new keyboard area) I have suggested to PGM that they add it to the top area of their keyboard and make it a panel for more convenient workflow instead of hiding it two clicks deep in the windows menu.

Jeff, I think what you are missing did reappear in beta 3.0.5 which was released to all. The chord name is now there for any chord you play on the keyboard in real time.

Is it true you cannot drag chord progressions into BIAB? I cannot seem to get it to work. Seem like a big miss by both companies if true.

Best I can confirm, you are correct. But it is even a little worse. As of the current beta 1.0.5, S3 can no longer drag and drop the Scaler Chord progression - with Chord Markers, into Reaper. S2 had a feature option called "insert midi markers", which is currently not in S3. But S3 b1.0.6 is due out today!. So Scaler is changing a lot at this time and I am hopeful. So for right now with 1.0.5, while you can drag and drop Scaler Chord progressions into the chord chart of BIAB-VST3, you can not do the same in BIAB. Instead, in BIAB it will treat the chord progression as a midi file so that will be inserted it on whatever individual track you designate, but that does not place the Chords on the chord sheet in BIAB for all the tracks to use. I am afraid it remains a little messy.
The reason I mentioned both companies not paying attention was PGM does not seem to be supporting a common ability in many plug-ins to drop chords. Most Daws now can make this a one step procedure.
PGM should be updating BIAB to see that the file is nothing more than MIDI block chords and then just auto convert the block chords to chord names and add or update at the point of the cursor with no pop up importing a midi file. Same as BIAB plugin.
This is a modern expectation. I guess I need to add it to the UI improvement thread since they’re probably not reading this.

It is safe to say that Scaler has had a difficult time of it with the launch of V3. Dramatically new workflow concepts which have taken a program which was initially difficult for many to comprehend to an even more complex level where folks have begun to bail ship. But I admire the development team. They stand behind their concepts and beliefs in the app. Changes continue to come based on user feedback (or is it screamback?).

Thanks Dan, I just tried Scalar 3 to seriously write a song progression this week, and I noticed two workflow gaps or areas that need improvements.
1) When you use the "linked chords to MIDI" triggers to record a true rhythmic pattern for the chord. There is no way to get that chord pattern back into Scalar 3. The rhythmic pattern is easily recorded in your DAW, but their "MIDI Capture" only records a MIDI file that cannot be used in Scale 3. This completely null in voids using any of their new master tracks, bass tracks, melody tracks etc. since the real chord progression, you want to use is not easily obtainable and Scalar 3. FR: The master track or working progression his ability to be updated from the link chords directly.
2) Although it has a ton of suggested chords, chord explorations, and modulation chord capabilities, it has no "passing chord" feature. FR: When selecting two chords add an ability to suggest a "passing chord" that moves between chord one and chord two, and a straightforward way to insert that chord.
BTW wouldn't it be cool to see some of these harmization tools native in BIAB?

Improvements Bass Follow (Arrange Page): Can now be applied as a global motion. Mute Tool: Added mute icon to the Arrange page, making it easier to mute chords and clips (previously only possible via Shift+Click ). Live Sync Optimisation: Improved plugin responsiveness and reduced lag when using Live Sync. Scale Detection: When multiple matches exist, Scaler now prioritises Major/Minor scales (e.g. A Minor over Gb Mixolydian). MIDI Detection: Improved accuracy in distinguishing single notes and chords. Keyboard Navigation: Lists in Section A (Browse) can now be scrolled and selected via up/down arrow keys; added < and > for category navigation. Suggest Chords / Neo-Riemannian: Improved handling of chords without 3rds or 5ths when Minimise Movement is enabled. Help Access: New Help tab in the settings menu links directly to documentation.
Fixes Fretboard View: Correctly retains fretboard display when reopening the window. Installer (Mac): Added prompt recommending a restart after installation. Section A Detection: Now auto-scrolls after 8 chords detected. Play Quantise / Latch: Fixed unexpected behaviour with quantise and latch playback when DAW Sync Off. Track Output: Fixed issue where output was muted after inserting some VST3 audio effects in certain hosts (Mac/Windows). User Chord Sets: Improved import reliability. Added Reveal Location menu option, and clarified folder selection. Velocity Handling: Dragging chords from any section now retains correct default velocity. Individual MIDI notes in the editor now respect default velocity instead of playing at 127. Zoom & Scroll: Closing and reopening Scaler now retains zoom and scroll position. Keys Lock: Fixed issue where notes were cut off unexpectedly. Global Transform Controls: Now update correctly after changes elsewhere. Section B Voicing and Colors Handling: Fixed octave jump and voicing selection issues. Performances: Corrected global and child track performance levels (previously 6dB too low). Right-Click Add to Track: Now sets chord duration to one bar, matching drag-and-drop behaviour. Strummed Sequences: Fixed cases where chords failed to populate. MIDI Output: Track MIDI output now works correctly when VST/VST3 insert FX is added. Sound Selection: Fixed an issue where some internal sounds could not be selected if another sound in the same position was previously chosen. Dragging Multiple Chords: Resolved crash when dragging multiple main track chords. Audio Export: Fixed hang when exporting audio while using multiple instances of third-party instruments. Clip Editing: Improved lasso/select behaviour and reduced clip drop indicator size. Tutorial: Standalone tutorial now opens correctly on first launch. Modal Interchange: Fixed incorrect mode list after reopening Scaler.
Scaler 3.2 Coming Nov 25, 2025 Just a heads up and some ramblings. As i have mentioned Scaler 3 was a significant change in regards to workflow verses prior versions. Unfortunately, so significant that it alienated a lot of users ( me included) who did not fully understand the changes. But with this video just release I now feel I see what is going on....
David shows us how new features are being introduced. With that he gives us a view of his workflow in Scaler 3. Viewing this video, I now understand that the developers have designed Scaler 3 to accomodate their unique and individual workflows in sound production. This answers my long asked question, who is this program designed for?
Fact is, as a current user, I have to admit my workflow in Scaler has always been fully "self designed". Meaning, I don't always really know what to do in this app or when to do it. To defend myself (and others like me), I am involved in all the aspects of my music creation. That means I create, write, produce, perform, engineer, arrange, mix, master and release all my musical offerings. So my problem with Scaler Workflow, since the release of Scaler 3, has been when do I involve Scaler 3 in my process (workflow)?
I still don't have the answer to that question, but I am enjoying the journey that Scaler is taking me on.
Dang it Dan! You should know I hate trying to keep secrets

Something New coming in the next week or two. I am sworn to secracy so that is all I can say now. Keep an eye out in the Scaler Forum!
Binding chords is a nice way to use the chords in a real fashion, but it blew me away when I found no way to record the performance back into Scaler.
This seemed like a major dead end to the idea of building tracks inside of Scaler.

Sure you can: Its a DAW routing thing. Here are some quick instructions for routing. I can make a quick video if it would help. I work in reaper.
Scaler 3 can output MIDI notes generated by its performance or chord playback. To capture that in your DAW:
✅ Method 1 (works in most DAWs, e.g. Reaper, Studio One, Cubase, etc.)
Load Scaler 3 on a MIDI/Instrument track. Play or trigger chords/patterns inside Scaler. Create another Instrument Track (this will be the instrument you want Scaler to control, e.g., a piano or synth). Route Scaler’s MIDI output → to the second instrument track’s MIDI input. In Reaper: On the Scaler track: click the routing button → Send MIDI → All → Channel 1 to the instrument track. On the instrument track: record-arm and set Record: Output (MIDI). In Cubase: set the input of the second instrument track to Scaler 3. In Logic: use the MIDI FX Wrapper (Scaler in MIDI FX slot) and record on the instrument track.
Opps, I have the most current beta for the next version 3.2 due to come out shortly. I am not sure that this feature is present in prior versions. You will have to try.
OK, sorry again. I see now you indicated that Scaler will not record the performances and chords "in Scaler". You are likely correct with that. But recording everything in the DAW is a nice option..
You misunderstood me. It’s not a matter of recording bound scaler chords in your DAW. That’s an easy thing to do.
It’s a matter of recording the performance back into the master track in Scaler. On the phone right now so I don’t know if the exact term they use for it in the third tab in Scaler.
It seems like it should be a no-brainer button, to select inside of Scaler. I requested this feature formally on their website last year, but have not heard anything about it since.
To me, It was a big dead end.

No problem, but do you also think it’s it’s strange that they spent a year rewriting scaler three to Support multiple track ideas and yet they don’t let you record your bound chords which are triggered and sourced by scaler itself.
To me, it was the most obvious step to support.

I am afraid that Scaler 3 has been an enigma to me since it launched. That somewhat explains all the changes which keep coming. The only reason I continue to battle with it, is because it is the price I am willing to pay in my attempt to understand music at this level. Kind of like BIAB, we put up with a lot just to do what it does. So I try not to complain about ether of this music apps (well not too much).

I think this may be closer to what you are looking for? Or is it just getting more convoluted - have to admit my eyes get a little glazed over with these demos! I have not yet tried this wordflow. All recording is in Scaler. No routing in the DAW required.
Thanks Dan but that is not it either. Don't feel bad about being confused, their videos are often too long and complicated. If you are beta testing for them, please give them this feedback directly. Their videos need to be a short video on how to do X. The video is only about how to do X and doesn't get sidetracked showing off other features.
All those examples are ways of getting different MIDI out of Scaler. The term I was looking for earlier was the "Arranger tab" in the "Main track". The missing functionality is a button or mode in the Arranger tab where the "Main track (in Scaler)" records your "bounded chords" performance. Why? This allows you to build arrangements and grooves in scalar then export them.
"DAW in a DAW" Yes, there are many plugins (including BIAB plugins), that allow you to record or recreate multitrack MIDI or audio in the plugin that can be played In Sync with the DAW or drug to the DAW to consolidate.

Thanks for clarifcation Jeff. I got a bit confused (??). Turns out the video I posted immediately above was~ 5 months ago. So NOT the new beta stuff. v. 3.2 will be published early Nov 2025. I am not to speak about v3.2. Nor am I to speak about the new app to be release Oct 22, 2025. Safe to say the developers remain busy. At least it is not boring.
I guess this should have been it own thread, but since we started hinting at it here,
The Scaler folks have finished work on a new piece of software, free to Scaler 3 owners. Scaler Detector is a VST/AU/AAX plugin and standalone application that takes Scaler's award-winning key and chord detection into its own package.
Get your free copy from the My Products page at the Scaler Music website – and spread the word to your friends, bandmates, collaborators and co-producers, because Scaler Detector brings the music theory power for just $9!

Hey DrDan, any reports of problems with Scaler Detector disappearing from My Products page?
I got an email from Scaler saying as a Scaler 3 owner I get a free copy of Scaler Detector.
I followed the link in the email and saw both Scaler 3 and Scaler Detector in my Products page.
I downloaded the latest Scaler and the new Scaler Detector from my Products page.
I installed the new Scaler and then installed Scaler Detector.
I launched Scaler Detector and it wants me to enter my serial number and activate Scaler Detector.
So I returned to my Products page on the Scaler website but now Scaler Detector is missing from the My Products page so I don't have the serial number! And I never received any email from you confirming my copy of Scaler Detector.
I did not receive a serial number for the Scaler Detector either in my email. However the serial number was right underneath the Scaler serial number in My Products page. I did have something weird happen to me though as it says you can have up too 5 activations of Scaler Detect and it has somehow used two of them even though I have only installed it on one machine.

Thanks Dan. Yes it is the first step. Now we need the ability to swap the user chords a master track. Not since I have been looking for a way to perform the master tracks especially in terms of timing.

I had to reinstall Scaler 3 it seems it did not like the first install of the new version and I am not sure why but it is working now.

Brain I just got home and had a chance to test it on Win 11. Creating a new song and just testing 3.2 in Studio 7.2.3 everything is working fine. I did have a few background errors when scanning for plugins They completed the install. In the previous version I was having occasional crashes with the Scaler audio. So far nothing out of the ordinary. An existing song or did you start a new song for testing? When it crashes and you restart studio one does it create a crash report?

Hi Jeff, after installing 3.2 I ran Studio One Pro 7 and started a new song then dragged Scaler over to a new track and it went straight to the desktop crashed. I did create a crash report but did not submit it. After playing around I noticed the date for the VST3 file was not todays date so I reinstalled Scaler again and that cleared it all up. The stand alone Scaler program worked fine it was just with the VST3 plugin I was having issues but it is all good now.

The program now sports a sleek, modern GUI redesign across the entire interface, including updated toolbars, refreshed windows, smoother workflows, a new dark mode option, and more. The brand-new side toolbar provides quicker access to key windows, while the new Multi-View feature lets you arrange multiple windows as layered panels without overlap, creating a flexible, clutter-free workspace. We have an amazing new “AI-Notes” feature. This transcribes polyphonic audio into MIDI so you can view it in notation or play it back as MIDI. You can process an entire track (all pitched instruments and drums) or focus on individual parts like drums, bass, guitars/piano, or vocals. There's an amazing collection of new content too, including 202 RealTracks, new RealStyles, MIDI SuperTracks, Instrumental Studies, “Songs with Vocals” Artist Performance Sets, Playable RealTracks Set 5, two RealDrums Stems sets, XPro Styles PAK 10, Xtra Styles PAK 21, and much more!
There are over 100 new features in Band-in-a-Box® 2026 for Windows®.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: The Newly Designed Piano Roll Window
In this video, we explore the updated Piano Roll, complete with a modernized look and exciting new features. You’ll see new filtering options that make it easy to focus on specific note groups, smoother and more intuitive note entry and editing, and enhanced options for zooming, looping, and more.
Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
