A GIRL LIKE YOU

https://www.reverbnation.com/kaynemusic/song/34833457-a-girl-like-you

I was playing around with BIAB just going thru the styles demos, and happened to come across this old Midi style dated 7/2002 From Midi Set 1. I liked the bass / groove and it inspired me to write this song. I was going for a Holland/Dozer/Holland / Motown feel. I tried to find a updated Real tracks style but none had the same feel.

I exported the Midi Files into Cubase and using Halion 7, Modo Drums, and Synth V Kevin on Vocals. I added the horns and Rhoads. Its pretty cool for all Midi ....

****** Song Summary *************
Title: A Girl Like You
File:AGirlLikeYou.SGU
Key=C , Tempo 120, Length (m:s)=3:50
No intro. 113 bar chorus, from bar 1 to bar 113. Repeat x1 chorus
No Melody
No Soloist track.
Song is saved with Volume, Pan, Reverb, Chorus, Bank0,
Style is SOUL_1.STY (Soul 1)
Style MIDI Instruments are : Finger Electric Bass (34), Electric Piano (5), Clean Electric Guitar (28),
MIDI Drums :1 Standard Drum Kit (1)

*******************

I saw her / yesterday
it has been so long / since I went away
I saw her / my how she has grown
Im glad that she / turned out that way

I cant explain the feeling like this
its a mystery
A girl like you / is all I need

An Angel / sent from heaven above
Girl you are to me / a labor of love
Her Smile / like a sunny day
I'm so glad that I / came back this way

I cant explain the feeling like this
its a mystery
A girl like you / is all I need
I saw her / and the stars aligned
Girl you are to me / one of a kind

Elliott,

Cool indeed! It sounds great. Love the horns and the midi really sounds excellent, as does the mix.

I also like how you have used the Synth V voice here - sound natural and perfect for the arrangement.

EXCELLENT!

Hey Elliot, don't put down yourself, I think this is a great song and arrangement. I wish I was able to write lyrics, but I can't. That's why I have to stick with instrumentals. And yes, I do the same finding real gems within the all-midi style demos. Sometimes the Real tracks substitute is no better in my opinion.
Cheers

Mike B.

Elliot, super Motown sound here. Like the write and the space you've left around the phrasing for the groove to shine. Nice feel from the vocalists, too. All wrapped up in a catchy, toe-tapper of an arrangement. Nicely done!

Nailed it, Elliott. You really captured that Motown feel of HDH. Superb. This song is in so many ways so much better than Gordy would've expected. You're right too about how (especially Jamerson's lines) the bass is so very important. You have accomploished what I've been trying for so long. Now I'm just gonna give up. Love it!

Enjoy whatever happens!

I really connected with your comment about hoping to find a RT style to fit the idea you have in your head and then deciding that “we’ll, it will have to be a MIDI style”..sometimes it’s just not there…but I don’t think your work suffers at all b/c of s the vocals that really carry the day. The way you did it is a perfect use of the style. Of course, great vocals and real nice lyrics.

Hey Elliott,

Man do you ever know how to write a retro hit.

Hope you don't take that the wrong way, because of course it is modern, but as I don't really like modern "hits" at all, I give that to you as huge compliment.

You are becoming such a pro songwriter. Everything you do is so catchy, well produced and easy on the ears, as they say. Totally sync.

Great job man.

Elliott, this is fantastic
Super groove
Outstanding synth vocal - it sounds so real
Outstanding instrumentation and mix
" Its pretty cool for all Midi ...." NEVER underestimate the power of MIDI!
Loved it.

Pretty cool song with a great vibe.
I love it.

Hi, Elliott.

Yep, it's got that old school feel and sticks in my head after it's done. smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Elliott,,

Love this throwback style. Di and I used to do a few of these (before her health took a major nosedive). I repostone of them soon.

Great use of the horns and the drums.

Your music is always a joy to listen to.

Definitely has a Motown feel, catchy rhythm well used. Poppy lyrics complete the combination with the smiling melody. No problem with MIDI, doesn't harm the pleasant pop experience. The horns sound great. Good work with the vocals, Kevin sounds very nice in the upper register. I enjoyed those harmonies.

We are full blown retro folks so the vibe was nice for us.
The sweet lyric and horns are standouts as is the very well nuanced vocal.
That vocal would seem to take a lot of forethought and work.
Add all that to your typical excellent mix and you have a winner.

Enjoyed it!

Hi Elliott.

Gosh! What a stellar production.
I've never heard Kevin sound better. I would never have known that this is a Synth V vocal.
What impressed me the most, though, was that this song used a MIDI-based style... from 2002!!!
It goes to show that 'newer' isn't always 'better.'
I loved everything about this.
It was an excellent listen!
