So, I've been mucking around with Playable Real Tracks to get more of the bassline that I'd like, and it dawns on me that there may be an easier way. With Utility Tracks available, wouldn't it be easier to write the MIDI part in a Utility Track, set to the Hi-Q MIDI sound and then mute the Real Track in the appropriate places using Bar Settings? Working with Playable Real Tracks, I keep finding myself having to remember to set areas as Playable Tracks, move the notes around to where I want them, set the "Create Mute Region to mute general accompaniment", etc. It seems like I could even use Finale to notate the notes and rhythms that I want, export to a .mid file, and use that.
That said, what is the easiest way to confirm the Hi-Q MIDI patch for a particular Real Track?

Yes. It's logical to get the midi right first and then invoke the Playable RealTrack feature.
< It seems like I could even use Finale to notate the notes and rhythms that I want, export to a .mid file, and use that. > Yes. It can be done in Finale and imported into BIAB.
So, when we use Playable Real Tracks for a particular Real Track, BIAB asks about using a particular Hi-Q MIDI patch for that sound. How can we figure out the suggested patch ahead of time, without going into PT?

I'm not following why you're trying to figure out the suggested patch ahead of time. It seems irrelevant.
The Hi-Q Midi patch for that sound is assigned by PG Music and is either the same instrument if PRT samples have been recorded or the nearest same sounding patch PG staff have paired with that specific RealTrack if exact samples haven't yet been recorded. PG Music is constantly building the list of Playable RealTracks and it's my understanding that all RealTracks will eventually have exact samples.
Regardless which patch is initially assigned, the user is free to search and select any other Playable RealTrack Patch to replace the current selected RealTrack Playable RealTrack Patch.
You need to ask PG for a list of what RT uses what SFZ or better still they should put it in a column in the RealTrack picker. Yes, I found some match pretty good and other are a completely different tone so you need to use an EQ matching Plugin. Yes, the easiest way is put the midi on another track and use volume automation on the RealTrack. Another thing you can do is use EZDrummer, EZKeys or EZBass and you route the midi out of them to the SforzandoVST with the sfz for the RT/RD.

I think it would be a good idea if BB automatically added a mute region when you set notes as playable - I'll put that in as a feature request, as it would save one step.

Simply click on the Playable Track button in the Piano Roll window - it will pop up asking you to install the Hi-Q patch, with the name of the suggested patch in that dialog.
The reason I would want to know the Hi-Q patch is for the possibility of using a Utility track instead of PT. If I create the bass part in Finale, export it to BIAB as .mid, I would want to use the MIDI patch that is best for the sound of the RT bass that I'm replacing. I'd like to take out the step of searching for the Playable RealTrack Patch.

Exactly. The steps I posted above will tell you the name of the patch in one click.
