has steinberg changed its licencing routine? i think i've seen something in forums but can't remember what. how can i get it back? elicencer shows licence discontinued. can i download a more receent freebie version?

There is a major conflict with the ARIA Player. You may have to edit some code to get everything working until they release the next update — yes, really. Since I do not use HaLIon with BIAB, I've ignored this. If you need to make those edits, have Support walk you through this. Steinberger Support uses the free version of Zoom which means that there's a 40 minute limit on a call.
You probably need to have a conversation with Steinberger Support. There are many articles on their Support pages as well. The latest updates made for macOS Hell that took me many hours to resolve on my own—I had to re-download everything and install everything manually — and then the Steinberg Download Assistant still threw up a number of errors but everything now worked.
E-licenser issues have been a royal PIA for Yamaha/Steinberg. For that reason, they will be discontinued April 2025. I haven't seen an announcement on what takes its place yet.

thank you for the reply MIke. I have of course contacted Steinberg support. However I have seen - if I remember correctly - forum posts about steinberg changing its sales model. I was hoping that forumites might be able to point me to a way to reauthorise my exiisting Halion Sonic - or advise me that i would need a new subscription. Often advice in the forum is faster than support from suppliers.
as for 'yes -and' i noted the fact that the standalone version doesn't work either to help eliminate this as a PG Music/BIAB issue. It's a Steinberg problem. I actually downloaded the HAlion Sonic as part of the Dorico package following advice in the forum. While I wait for Steinberg any help from the forum from members who have had a similar problem and solved it would be gratefully received and a reply showing I am not alone would at least reassure me.

well its started working again......................the old turn it off and turn it back on worked a charm after restarting the pc. oddly enough the output device wouldn't show my audigy speakers but changing the sounblaster to stereo and not surround and changing the windows playback setting on the audigy to cd quality it all came back. but not sure what if anything is actually fixed it.

Oh yeah, glad you got it working. I wasted a few hours in the effort last week on my Mac following all the instructions.
Finally, a couple days ago, I decided to just download everything and reinstall manually. Everything came back to life although the Steinberg Download Assistant still throws a bunch of errors. Nuts to that noise—I’m declaring victory for now.
I’m hoping that, when the e-Licenser goes away in a few months (this was first promised 4 years ago), they have reengineered the whole authorization/update process but frankly, I am not getting my hopes up.
