I tasked myself with writing a bluegrass ballad and this hook seemed to fit the occassion. Lyrics in the SoundCloud description.

Very folkie bluegrass with superb vocals and excellent lyrics. The instrumentation styles are well chosen, but I found the fiddle distracted from the vocals, so if I'd arranged it I'd have only had it playing as an instrumental break and exactly as you have it also at the end. An ace song, nonetheless.

Very good, very American.
Love the lyrics and the way you deliver them.
I'd probably make it a rock song after the first chorus for contrast and go back to the bluegrass vibe for the last chorus, but then of course it wouldn't be a ballad anymore and, as you may know, I have no idea what real bluegrass is smile

Dewey, lovely song! GREAT vocals. Nicely gritty delivery, and you really nailed the high passage in the bridge to great emotional effect. Super harmonies, too. I really like the acoustic band a lot, and the simple approach works perfectly here. I'd say you absolutely nailed your bluegrass ballad objective. smile

Excellent!!! Caught my ear from the very first few notes. The lyrics are bittersweet and moving, the progression of the melody (especially in the chorus, which is so catchy) really skilled ... your voice reminds me of a mixture of Don McLean and someone else whose name escapes me, right now.

You've done a tremendous job, here, from every angle ... well done.

Nice one, Dewey.
Shows that often, less is more.
I agree that sometimes the fiddle collides with the vocals.

Probably more Americana than bluegrass but still a very enjoyable song.

Nicely done.

Dewey ever? Yes, always. Another trerrific write, Dewey. That enjoyable vocal we've come to expect without disappointment. Relatable lyrics sit on the perfect sing-along melody --well, at least until the Bridge where I need to switch to low harmony. Broken Heart Bouquet. Great hooky title.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks for listening and all the kind words everyone.

Yes, I think it is more Americana since the style name is 'Roanoke Mountain Americana'. Adding a banjo and calling it bluegrass didn't fool anyone, apparently. LOL

Thank you for pointing the fiddle mix out to me, WaoBand and others! It bothered me so much after reading your comment that I was up early this morning mixing the fiddle down; however, I felt it important to keep it in the same spaces - just softer now. The other item was eliminating the pans and just having all tracks right up the center. Great suggestion and I think the softness of the fiddle in this version is much better.

Dewey, I'm a big fan, your vocals are great and your songs are terrific, too. I'm not the biggest country fan, but you and Floyd are exceptional in my book. I'll never forget that tune "I would have found you." Great work.

Dewey,

I would say Americana with some Bluegrass influence. Regardless, they're just discretionary pigeonholes, anyway.

What matters is what's between the first and last sounds. And this one is pure excellence from start to finish. Your lyrics almost always tell a nice story. For me, that's important in any of the various country genres and subgenres. That mix of styles is snippets from real life in America. And you tell those stories so well.

As I always do, I enjoyed your song very much. Excellent any way you look at it.

Alan

This production is lovely and melancholy.

The great poignant vocals really nailed the feel.

The band is nice and mellow and well supports the vibe.

We played in bluegrass bands for many years and appreciated the open/airy mix.

Enjoyed it!
