It seems only the Style Picker that is designed to to look for these style in single folder. This is rather perverse for a utility that is meant to list all styles. This was not a consideration as organization of styles is intended to be done in the Stylepicker, including filtering for user styles. However I'll put in a feature request, as I can see it being useful.
