While a good song all in the diatonic can be delightful, there is nothing as surprisingly beautiful as a well crafted key change or insertion of a borrowed chord. Listen to this wonderful song from late 70s (I think) Voyager - Halfway Hotel - or this song from Australian band Thirsty Merc - My completeness: Wonderful stuff! Without multi-key progressions / borrowed chords, these songs wouldn't exist. It's part of the magic that is music! As with everything else.... the song itself dictates if there's a key change/modulation in the song or not. Same thing with rit endings and bridges. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
