March, 1982..long drive across the Eastern Washington high desert, returning from a week out of town and thinking ahead to St. Patrick's Day..snippets of phrases coming to mind. When I got home I made it into a well-formed song, but no clue about the lyric story. Then, many years later, with the first Spring Training games, the melody met the story and it took shape. Finally got it into BIAB form within the last few years.

PATRICK'S DAY

Lazy August day, warm up the pines again;
Trop, the Jake or Shea;
Wondering if this might be when.
Least I'm in the showI just need that starting shot,
Hey, I know I can throw!
Guess one day they'll see what I've got.

Gazin' out to right; gentle breeze blowin' in;
Twilight turnin' night,
Day dreams of what might have been.
Coulda got that call!
Maybe woulda stopped 'em cold but
Soon I'll get the ball!
Be patient, or so I've been told.

Then they'll say "Patrick's in today--Patrick sure can play!"
Yes, they'll say "Patrick's up to stay"
Now that will be my break-through day!

Stuff and power and form--
I know I can bring it all;
I've just got to keep it warm!
'Cause who knows when I'll get that call.

(Chorus)
