Look at the drivers for your peripherals. If there are Windows 7 drivers available, buy Windows 7. Getting the 64 bit version is the way to go, since it'll be future proof.

If your peripheral drivers don't support Win 7, then consider replacement of the device. It may be cheaper in the long run. Vendors are really no longer supporting XP, and everything is moving to Windows 7.

It's not hard to transition to 7, things work just the way they always did, for the most part. I wouldn't go back to XP unless I really was forced to.
