March, 1982..long drive across the Eastern Washington high desert, returning from a week out of town and thinking ahead to St. Patrick's Day..snippets of phrases coming to mind. When I got home I made it into a well-formed song, but no clue about the lyric story. Then, many years later, with the first Spring Training games, the melody met the story and it took shape. Finally got it into BIAB form within the last few years.
--------------
PATRICK'S DAY

Lazy August day, warm up the pines again;
Trop, the Jake or Shea;
Wondering if this might be when.
Least I'm in the showI just need that starting shot,
Hey, I know I can throw!
Guess one day they'll see what I've got.

Gazin' out to right; gentle breeze blowin' in;
Twilight turnin' night,
Day dreams of what might have been.
Coulda got that call!
Maybe woulda stopped 'em cold but
Soon I'll get the ball!
Be patient, or so I've been told.

Then they'll say "Patrick's in today--Patrick sure can play!"
Yes, they'll say "Patrick's up to stay"
Now that will be my break-through day!

Stuff and power and form--
I know I can bring it all;
I've just got to keep it warm!
'Cause who knows when I'll get that call.

(Chorus)

Tom,

Great song and great delivery. It sounds like late night at a piano bar. Excellent selection of track and mix.

Tom,
Very pleasant listening to this, and even only one listen, I was looking forward to the return to the chorus - if I could whistle, I would! I think it's given me an ear worm for the whole day.
I'm interested in the meaning of the lyrics - is it about someone famous in baseball, or about your own yearnings to be involved, or both? I don't know much about baseball - coming from Australia - so might have missed clues.
The music gave me winter and snow vibes, but not sure if St Patrick's Day in US is Winter or early Spring.

Tom, lovely tune! Super backing band and very effective vocal delivery. Like your vocal FX chain here again. On the chorus there's a slight amount of vocal distortion that sounds like clipping. Probably addressable if you choose to. Super tune either way!

Baseball is my favorite sport. I can watch it all day long. Doesn't matter if it's MLB or T-ballers...

That sure is a memorable melody in the chorus. Isn’t it magical the way songs develop. I never would have guessed that you got a baseball song out of St Patrick’s Day. That’s what’s so much fun about songwriting. If you’ve never been but get the chance to go, be sure and visit the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY. I went there two years ago and will guarantee you will have a day you won’t forget. Good job on the song!

Bob, Andrew, Ron, Tommy...Thanks for listening. Yeah, I'm not sure how these two themes got connected, but I like how it turned out. Baseball is romantic that way. Going to the HOF is on my "to do" list for this year, been there several times before.

Spring training --I'm all in, Tom. Coached for 17 years. Man, how cool to write a St. Patrick's Day song ABOUT BASEBALL. Brilliant, Tom. I love this in -the-park arangement. Patrick's up to stay. Really love this one, buddy.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Great chorus, I've tried to write a 3/4 and it just eludes me for some reason. Good job on this, your versatility is conspicuous! ; )

Hi, Tom.

Sweet lyrics, excellent setting.

I'm also hearing something off with the vocal doubling, but not a big deal.

I really enjoyed this! smile

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Very smooth, I really like your voice and the way you sing.
I second what Bob said, sounds like late night at a piano bar, preferably with a good glass of wine.
Technically, there are a few phasing issues with the vocals and the doubles, but nonetheless I enjoyed my listen a lot!

David/BD..thanks for listening...I'm not sure I can re-dig into the vocal, but maybe I can use stem-splitter to get to it so I can refine it. Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Tom,

I'm originally from St. Louis where baseball is a 2nd religion. I've been to Busch Stadium I, II, and III more than a few times. My father played in the minor leagues - never made the majors. So, IO grew up with baseball. I have 5 fantasy teams this year.

Nice, smooth-moving sounds. Your vocals are always excellent. Nicely done. I enjoyed this very much.

All the best,

Alan

PSD: Eastern Washington state - brutal;. But not quite as boring as driving completely across South Dakota and Nebraska on back-to-back days! But the scenery was nice - both trees had leaves on them!

Mike, Alan..thanks...I was trying to capture some of the feelings of early spring baseball, from the POV of a rookie reliever who is just itching to get his first chance in "the show"...

Nice backstory and we love the theme melding.

This is one of those tunes that would immediately draw you into a jazz club.

The mix is nice and airy -- everything has its perfect little place on the soundstage.
Perfect vocal also for the vibe.

Nice!
