This seems like a simple thing so I'm sure I'm missing something, but I couldn't find anything relevant from a quick search of the forums.

It seems like I very often have to build my song list from scratch when I try to browse a folder for a song, and the folder I use has over 8000 songs, so it takes a bit of time every time. Is there a way to save the songlist so it doesn't have to go through this process each time I use it?

OK, this is getting kinda frustrating. I just edited and saved a different version of a song. Then I went to find it and again I need to build the whole song list from scratch. I never even shut down the program. What in the world am I doing wrong??

Are you running BIAB as Administrator?

BIAB 2026 Win Audiophile. Software: Fender Studio One 8, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus Quantom HD8 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Hello,

When Band-in-a-Box builds a song list, it saves the information in a settings file in that it puts in that folder. This allows it to view the song list for that folder again, without having to rebuild it. If you are finding that it needs to rebuild the list everytime you open that folder, then there is something preventing Band-in-a-Box from saving it's settings file in that particular song folder. Most likely, Band-in-a-Box does not have permission (for some reason) to modify that folder.

The exact reason could depend on a number of things... your version of Windows, whether you are logged on as an administrator or standard/limited user, where your song folder is located, what version of BB you have and is it a hard drive version, if you have Windows Vista or Seven do you have User Account Control enabled.

As suggested, disabling User Account Control is likely one possible way for you to fix the problem. Or, let us know some of the info above...

Hi,
had the same problem; it's gone since I moved the bb directory from the program files-directory (where I first installed BiaB according to good ol' habits which turn out as bad habits in vista and win 7) to c:\. The Biab-installer is right to suggest this because the windows security officer doesn't like programs writing in the program files-directorys, sometimes even if the UAC is switched off. Seems that I have to change my habits under win 7 ...
Good luck
Wolfgang

Hey, sorry for my delay in returning to the thread. I do appreciate the responses. After I posted, I made due and then I haven't used it since. But now I'm back to take things up where I left off.

So, first off, I'm using XP and I am indeed logged in as an administrator. The BIAB version is 2006. The song folder is on an external USB drive. I'm not familar with User Account Control (I notice it was mentioned above in relation to Vista and Win7. Is this relevant to XP?)

So how do I let BIAB know it's ok to do whatever it wants on that drive?

(ETA: just figured out how to subscribe to the thread with email reminders, so I won't leave your helpful responses hanging again).

User Account Control is only applicable to Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Thanks for the info. Right, UAC not applicable to XP.

1. First, are you opening up the same folder all the time, or are you opening up songs from subfolders. Say you have folders like this:

Main song folder
--song subfolder 1
--song subfolder 2
--song subfolder 3

If you generate a song list in the main song folder, then open up one of the subfolders you'll still need to generate a song list for that subfolder.

2. If that's not what the issue is, then look in your song folder via Windows Explorer, after you have generated a song list for that folder. In that folder you should see a file with a name like "songlisttemp.bin".

If you DO see this file, then I don't know what the problem is. If you DON'T see this file, then the problem is that Band-in-a-Box is unable to write files to the USB hard drive for some reason. That is the underlying reason, there could be a few different causes. But since you have Windows XP and are an administrator, that eliminates several possibilities.

Try these things:

--In Windows Explorer, right-click on the song folder (on your USB drive) and select Properties. Make sure "Read-Only" is unchecked, and press Apply. If asked, you should apply to subfolders and files. Now see if the problem is solved.

--If that didn't help, you could try this:

1. Go back and right-click on the folder again and select Properties.
2. Click on Security, and click Add.
3. Type the word "everyone" (without the quotes) and press OK.
4. With Everyone selected, check the Full Control checkbox, and press Apply. Then press OK.

Now see if the problem is solved. If not, maybe there is some security software running on your computer that is preventing the access...

Andrew, thanks very much for your response. I haven't changed anything, (that I know of) but the problem seems to have gone away. The .bin file is indeed there and BIAB seems to have no trouble finding it on repeated start-ups. I'm really curious to know what was causing it in the past, but if it should happen again I'll update the thread.
