For me, I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics (they were just the vehicle for the music) and I like it that way when lyrics become fully integrated into the music. I read the lyrics afterwards and they non-specific which gives them a universal purpose to that heard by the listener.
The only bit I wasn't sure about was the ending - but that might be my OCD wanting everything to fall in neatly.

I'm the same when it comes to vocals, especially with a good singer; I initially listen to it as an instrument and then later come back and pay attention to the lyric.
