It's a New Change

I got Band in a Box 2025 as a Christmas present and have been using it to try to breathe some new life into some very old demo tapes I found in a box in the loft. These were originally recorded on a Tascam 144 Portastudio, which used standard cassette tapes running at twice normal speed in a single direction to provide four track recording. With only four tracks available, many of the recordings were 'bounced down' to free up tracks for additional instruments. None of the stem separation software available produced results of an acceptable quality so I realized I would to recreate most of the instruments. I found Audacity really useful for cleaning up the original recording and making small tempo adjustments. This track uses the vocal and MicroMoog synth from my original recording, but everything else is from BiaB.

Tempo: 125 bpm
Style: Duper Funky Horns
Bass: Electric Modern Slap Funk
Piano: Electric Rhythm Jazz Funk Movin
Guitar 1: Electric Rhythm Electric Fusion Funky
Guitar 2: Electric Soloist, Smooth Soul Fast
Guitar 3: Electric Background Single Note Wah.

Hi Neil!
While funk is not normally my genre, your song and that style sound perfect for each other. I went and searched _DUPER.STY to hear the style. Really interesting to hear the back story of how this track came to be. I could imagine the cassette tapes would not have been marvellous quality, but the vocal has certainly scrubbed up okay. Could you be tempted to post the original so we have 'before and after'. No probs if you'd prefer not.
Good stuff!

Well, Play That Funky Music, Neil!

...and welcome!

Super job recovering the vocal and mini moog and placing them seamlessly into a fun track. Nicely arranged and mixed, and it sounds like you've gotten the hang of the Band in a Box stuff. Looking forward to hearing more!

The 144 was a nice unit. Had a very similar Yamaha back in the day, and had hours of fun bouncing stuff around. Then I dedicated one of the precious four tracks to a SMPTE signal so I could sync live recordings with MIDI in a DAW. I thought I was George Martin! Those were fun times...

There's something about a funky bass line. It gets in my blood. Thanks for sharing this and I hope to hear more soon.

Thanks for the encouraging comments - they are much appreciated. Not sure I'd want to post the original versions of this song though!

Neil,
Excellent work in re-mixing older tunes using BIAB. Very fluid. I would never had guessed that material is many years apart. Good mix and listens very well. Thank you for sharing.

Neil, you have certainly mastered BiaB in record time!
Excellent funk
Great mix
An outstanding job mixing old tape material with BiaB.
Sounds great!

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Hey, Neil, welcome to the forum. Hey, whoever gave you this great gift, please thank them for us. I also had (still have somewhere) a Tascam recorder. This is a terrific rendition. Man, you made something special here. Those horns are perfect --heck, the whole dang thing is perfect. Excellent piece!!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Impressive production. The two original tracks sound good and fit right in with the BIAB tracks, which amazes me given the age of the tape. Excellent listen!
