Groove Dat Pie on Soundcloud
Groove Dat Pie on YouTube

A song about enjoying your weekend after a long week of working just to pay some rich guys bills.

Style is _SUMP.STY (Sump Grooving New Orleans Piano)

RealTracks in style: 4493:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm NewOrleansSwampSw16 sw16 090
RealTracks in style: 2621:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Swing16WahWah Sw16 085
RealTracks in song: 2819:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm RnBSoulSw16Brent Sw16 085
RealDrums in style:FunkNewOrleansSw16: a: Snare, HiHat b: BusySnare, Kick was used in the redesign in EZDDrummer.
Dave Bell (Blue Attitude) played guitar. Bill Davis (zydecoal) played washboard and sang some harmonies. I played bass, guitar and sang.

There are 74 active tracks in the mix, 18 with at least one envelope. Although there are 5 Buses, it was crazy to mix –or maybe the crazy part was me. There are 19 drum tracks, and 12 audience tracks, 2 vocal and 8 harmony tracks.

Here's a page explaining the audience reactions

Groove Dat Pie
I'm filled with gumbo and headin' into town.
Gotta catch the groovey train and see who's gettin' down.
I worked all week in the rythnm of the grind.
Gotta clear those cobwebs from my mind.
Groove dat pie, melodious fish fry. Groove dat pie.

Slice me off a piece o' dat New Orleans beat.
Gotta taste that groovy pie, That rhythm sounds sweet.
I worked all week, and felt my life would end.
Gonna feel alive once again.
Groove dat pie, that good ol' NOLA pie. Groove dat pie.

I hear that rhyhtm and my feet just got to dance.
That's why I come into this town on weekend nights.
The music's never over cuz we won't give it a chance.
We dance all night then through daylight.

(Groove dat Groove dat Groove dat pie groo-grove dat
Groove dat Groove dat Groove dat pie groo-grooooove)x2

I work all week just to pay some rich guy's bills.
On weekends I just want to fly.
I worked alone in the dead night, so now I wanna groove dat pie.
Last line: Groove dat pie, that good ol' second line. Groove dat pie.

Marty,

Wow! Love the live feel of this one! The vocals are excellent and sound like you are singing to thousands at a festival. Incredible mix. Dave and Bill sound awesome as well.

74 tracks! I can’t even begin to imagine. LOL! What a tremendous production.

Loved every bit of it!

Marty & Team,

Positive and big sounding tune! You've assembled a fine band (I am talking about real guys). Nice playing by all! Vocals are a bit distant, as likely most big performances, but powerful. Washboard definitely gives this a cool flavor. 74 tracks.... not a joke! Good job in mixing this wilderness. Enjoyed my listed and thank you for sharing.

I had to log in just reading the title of this one. That guitar at 3 nearly killed me...it's my favorite guitar sound of all time. I'm getting ready to goove dat pie. Not what you think!!! I have a pie crust ready to bake. Just haven't landed on what to fill it with yet...blueberries, banana cream, chocolate?

PS: I will never complain about having an unmanageable 20 something tracks ever again.

Pretty cool fake live atmosphere, it's really well done.
Even with Google translate I absolutely do NOT get what your song's about, but I don't have to because this is soooo cool.
Great work from everyone involved smile[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

74 tracks are insane.
I usually have around 20 (and about 10 buses to keep things manageable).

Marty, masterful job capturing the wild fun of Nawlins music. Not easy to tame that many tracks while maintaining clarity AND not loosing the almost-off-the rails feel. Super performances by all, but those vocals are insanely good.

FWIW, we're planning a trip back to the Big Easy next month...

Hi, Marty.

That's an insane number of tracks! shocked

You've nailed that live party sound. Fun listen!

...oh, and the band rose in popularity when "grove dat pie" became a PTO-approved euphemism for sex.

Hahahahahaha! laugh

Love the groove
As usual the vocal, bass, guitar lead, and mix are spot on.
I really liked this one.

ACE work Marty, Dave & Bill!
The human elements lift this into the stratosphere...or is that "stratocasts this"?
BIG sound from a big mix - I bet the screen stunned your eyes more than once.
The "Groove that" bvocs seemed, once or twice to get in the way of the superb lead vocal but it did give the live feel a nudge up too.
Loved it.

Cheers

Marty,

You and your cohorts have a great song and production on your hands. Sounds like it was recorded live at a county fair. Well,, 74 tracks is a bit much! But you managed each expertly - hats off for that!

SInce I don't use a DAW, the envelopes and buses don't mean much to me - other an envelope will eventually get my letter delivered, and a bus will get me across town for a buck-and-a-half. I just wing it with BIAB and Audacity - literally.. But this is pro-sounding stuff! Excellent woprk.

Thanks, Bob. 74 seems like a lot, but with all of those drum tracks and audience tracks, I thought it would be easier. But I spent way too much time with them.

Thanks, Misha. It was crazy fun for sure. Yeah, that washboard is subtle, but if you mute it, there's a big hole where it was. 73 tracks (although the Sheldon Prime number) just wouldn't cut it.

Haha. Thanks, Beth. Hey, if I can mix 74 tracks into my pie, surely you could mix all 3 of your choices into your pie. Sounds yummy.

Haha. Thanks, Dan. Yeah, you're right about audience appreciation in the virtual world. I once did one for Midnight Train where the guitar soloist had a roaring applause while the harmonica player only got a smattering.

Sounds like a good time in NOLA! Personally I may be getting a little long in the tooth for day drinking and all night partying but believe you me I know a good time when I hear it. 74 tracks? That’s a crazy amount of time and energy spent. But it sure sounds like fun. Good job to you and the band. Movin and shaking my way out of here.

Thanks, Chay. I forgot to mention credit for most of those audience tracks goes to freesound.org; the others where from me.

Haha. Thanks, Brain. The only thing fake was the audience. All Real Tracks and real people --oh, yeah, except the drummer. Google does have its limitations. smile wink

Thanks, Ron. Yes, much fun for sure. Hey, man, I wish it was just a few years ago for me. We would definitely meet you there. Try this one night, say around midnight: play this song on one of the side streets in the French Quarter and see if it draws a crowd. Hahaha. At least I could say it was played in NOLA. Don't forget to setup a tip jar. Naw, have a great time!! Send pix.

Haha AH, David, you took the deep dive into the audience file. AND you recognized the PTO police. Yeah, the same ones who insist every kid gets a trophy and the bus stops at ever kid's front door.

Wow, ambitious project! Really liked the energy in this. Had me tapping my feet. Was playing my harmonica to it. Can't do any better than that. Great job!

Man, we time out after 8 tracks or so. Wow.

We enjoyed the vibes that are similar to Dr. John and even some early Little Feat.

Bill’s washboard and harmony fits in a fine mix along with your and Dave’s excellent performances.
(Dave’s solo is happy per Janice. 😊 )

Thanks for the explanation of the audience reaction.
In addition to the crowd sounds it made us feel as though Scotty beamed us right there to your concert.

FUN!

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
