Hi Folks.
This started a few months ago as a collaboration between me, Sasha K. and Ray C. It was an interesting, but very slow burning project as I was not happy with my vocals & mix and gave it far too many tries. This is a last variant that was finished last week. (I am still not very satisfied with it). Critical suggestions are most welcomed. Thank you for listening.

When The Curtains Fall

Hips of dreams, froze in time,
When you are gone.
Playing poker with ghosts through the night, till the break of the dawn.
Loneliness coils like a snake, there's nothing left to hide.
Trapped in this feeling - Like I am the last man of his tribe.

A cause and effect -
Life you will not regret on your darkest day.
Who will remember your deeds when the curtains fall.

Shards of existence held in time,
When you are gone.
Playing chess with regret through the night,
Shadow takes the last pawn.
my snake, sheds its skin yet again,
to better feel the change of wind.
Trapped in this waking,
Until all I know is pain.

Pause and reflect
Life you will not regret on your darkest day.
Who will remember your name when the curtains fall.

tech stuff:
Lyrics: me & Ray C.
Nylon string guitar: Sasha K.
Arrangement/mix: me.

XK, the thing I love about this forum is being exposed to songs, styles, lyrical themes I would not have considered but work wonderfully. Same with this song. You said you weren’t quite satisfied, and I have felt the same with some of my own - I wonder how many of us feel this way?

Did I hear repeated delay on piano or another instrument? It reminded me of a well-known song here in Australia called ‘Sounds of then’ by Gangajang.

This is a brilliant mix and a haunting song. Love the chorus, interlude and the vocals.

Gosh, this sounds GREAT! Super arrangement, pleasingly expansive mix and overall quite cinematic to my ears. LOVE your vocals. Love ALL of it!

Misha, not sure what aspect your uncertain about…it’s obviously highly creative, inventive, and well-produced. My only suggestion is that in some areas I felt that your vocal was competing with the piano..maybe regulate the piano volume down a bit in the verse area, then bring it back up for emphasis. Well, these are never really “done”, are they?!

Hey there, Misha, that was an intricate piece. I actually had to check that I didn't have another song open playing at the same time. I think it goes back to what Tano said about your vocals and the piano fighting with each other. I really appreciate your poetic lyric writing and originality with the band. In regards to your vocals, sounded good to me. You sounded so much like Bryan Ferry in the beginning!

Hi, Misha.

I understand how you might feel this didn't end up where you wanted it, but it's an excellent song nonetheless.

Sometime a song is going to be what it wants to be. laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I agree. In some areas I had a hard time hearing the lyrics. Other than that I though everything else was well done.

Yet again I had the pleasure of collaborating with Misha in my small way - just a few words.
Yet again Misha took the best bits of what I scribbled and made them fit this wonderful song & story.
Misha,
it sounds GREAT and I dig it!

Cheers

Misha,

Fantastic production. Your music is always up there with best on the forum. It's a very cinematic production, as has already been said. In places the piano steps on the vocal a bit. Other than that - I'd say near perfect. Also, this is probably your best vocal I've had the privilege to hear.

Excellent~!

Love your lyrics, Misha. Always so... deep. Sounds like a rather complex arrangement, but that is certainly nothing for you. To me it sounds great. I wouldn't change a thing. Was it your vocal you kept redoing? Been there. Every song you do is special, man. I would agree that the vocal could come out more, especially in a few places where the rest gets a little busy, but it is all so good. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Very cool song Misha. Loved the descriptive lyrics. Lots of imagery. Excellent vocal and backtrack. Mix was excellent on my speakers as well.

Thoughts:

We always love your writes and, man, did this one every grab us from the get go:
“Hips of dreams, froze in time,
When you are gone.
Playing poker with ghosts through the night, till the break of the dawn.
Loneliness coils like a snake, there's nothing left to hide.
Trapped in this feeling - Like I am the last man of his tribe.”

Wow!

Sasha’s guitar sounds very good and fits the lyric so well.

Your vocals sound very good to us and you know we loved the outro scat singing.

As always, we enjoyed your mix of instruments and those horns sound great.

Enjoyed it!

Hi Misha

You're at it again, aren't you? Crankin' out earworms like it's going out of style (which, let's be honest, it is... in Western music, anyway).
Production's so good it almost hurts. Almost. Okay, maybe just a little less drum compression, and a teensy bit more low pass on the piano... no biggie.
You remind me, in the best possible way, of what would happen if Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello and Azamat Kudzaev of Miyagi & Andy Panda had a secret jam session in a haunted Carpathian castle.
Seriously, your East-European cultural perspective is like a refreshing slap in the face to the predictable drivel polluting the airwaves. You're single-handedly preventing Western music from becoming a beige, flavourless mush. Thank you for your service.
You’ve been AWOL! I thought you'd been kidnapped by a rogue balalaika orchestra. But welcome back!

And now, for some serious cultural analysis: how does your esteemed self stack up the following: Vitas, Little Big (don't deny their genius!), Oxxxymiron, and the musically unhinged Leningrad? Asking for a friend... who may or may not be writing a doctoral thesis on the globalization of absurdist pop.

Another brilliant production with you incomparable ability for unique instrumentation. Those opening synth flutes indicated a joyful ride was yet to come. I immensely enjoyed listening to this.

Thank you everybody for listening and commenting, especially sharing points on mixing!

Andrew,
Yes, I was experimenting with delay automation. I might of over used it a bit smile
---
Izzy,
Thank you for fun and insightful comments, especially particulars on mix!
On the artists you've mentioned. They are stars....Talented. I like some of ethnic songs performed by Vitas. Oxxxymiron is very successful commercially, but even with his fantastic lyrical skills, he is copycatting lots of western Rap/HipHop artists. Leningrad... I liked their first 2 albums, which sounded very fresh, but everything that was done in the past 25 years felt like more of same. Still seems Shnurov has a solid following. I completely lost my interest in the band when he started flirting with politics. My preference is toward a bit darker music like GrOb, Ayction, Viktor Coi, Splin and so on. Older stuff. Unfortunately, a number of prominent musicians sided with kremlin and I have lost respect for their art.
