OK, Why are there utility tracks... Answering just this part, they were added a while back to increase the number of available tracks, but then they had many differences from the 'standard' tracks. PGM are, or at least have been, working towards "all tracks are equal", but they're not fully there yet and things sometimes move rather slowly.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.
